Steve Hewlett, the presenter of BBC Radio Four's 'The Media Show' died this morning aged 58. He had been suffering from cancer for a few months, and he had been told recently that it was terminal. He had been conversing on the subject with Eddie Mair of Radio 4's P.M. programme most weeks since September last year, the very last time being exactly a week ago, from his bed at the Royal Marsden Hospital. The tone was never mawkish and made for very moving listening, as evidenced by the audience response over those months, which had never been greater in the programme's history, and it goes back decades.
Steve Hewlett may not have been a 'celebrity' but as a producer at TV's 'Panorama' he was responsible for the Martin Bashir interview with Princess Diana and the programme which comprehensively trashed the rogue doctor with the theory about the alleged link between childhood vaccination and autism, and had a long career in newspapers and television, latterly live radio.
His family have released a statement saying 'he died listening to Bob Dylan' and, given you have to die, that seems a very comforting way to go, imo.
