Step free route from Guildford to Euston

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out a step free route from Guildford to Euston. The plan was to go via Waterloo and use the tube, but it seems there are no lifts at Euston. Added to the no bus, no wheelchair(...) requirement and with walking from either Euston Square or St Pancras being to far; it's flummoxed the tfl journey planner. An accessible taxi is an option (and my preferred one, but not of who I'd be making the journey with) so I thought I'd ask here about a train/tube route first! Clapham junction/Wembley seems to be a possibility, although I'm not sure it's a good one!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your journey might be shortened by changing at Clapham Junction and then at Willesden Junction - then on to Euston. This route should be step-free with the ramps provided.

Arrive Waterloo, walk out side exit by P1, turn ight, across the Pelican, down the roadway ramp to Lower Marsh, onto Waterloo Rd, catch 59, 68 or 168 accessible bus straight to Euston.

Edit - or even use the lift opposite P4/5 on the concourse down to Waterloo Road

If your companion could cope with a very short taxi ride, it's probably quickest to do train to Waterloo, tube to King's Cross/St P then a taxi ride along Euston Road.

The OP mentioned Wembley earlier, but where is his final destination? If it's up the WCML somewhere there may be step free options using the SN WLL service?

The final destination is Carlisle, so changing somewhere else isn't really possible. Unfortunately, escalators and buses are both a no go (if escalators were OK, there'd hardly be any problem at all!)

How about Guildford - Clapham Jct - Milton Keynes - Carlisle

Can you not go via XC as far as the west midlands then change onto Virgin's Birmingham - Scotland services? (ie Guildford, Reading, Wolverhampton, Carlisle)

That's the sort of thing I was thinking of, but of course Milton Keynes to Carlisle requires yet another change unfortunately...

Only the one through XC train a day at stupid o'clock. Otherwise you need a change somewhere like Reading.

I had wondered about the XC option (although not the couple a day that call at MKC. I don't think they are at very nice times though either) but discarded them because of the stupid o'clock leaving Guildford requirement (and similar when doing the journey in reverse). Thanks for the ideas though, they're much appreciated!

Well could you go from Guildford to Reading* on FGW? and then change their onto XC to Birmingham then change for Scotland there. All those stations have lifts for a step free interchange.
*Does Reading during construction?

I understand that would be a pain though. I think tube to Kings Cross then taxi down Euston Road might be your best bet.

The lifts at Reading to the partially closed footbridge were still in use when I was there last Friday, which surprised me somewhat. After Easter the new transfer deck will (with any luck) be open.

The Reading lifts are slightly more user friendly than before because the glass barrier dividing the footbridge into paid and public sides was removed last weekend when the carpark link span closed.

(As an aside I don't think there was ever much likelihood of the lifts going out of use early? There's no obvious engineering reason to remove them from use yet.)

I'm liking the Kings Cross/St Pancras + taxi option. I don't think that adding changes at Reading and New Street during their reconstruction is the best plan to be honest. As to why buses are such a no-no, I really have no idea; but they're most definitely not an option!

Why not just go to Waterloo and get a taxi? Its 10 mins at most from waterloo to euston.

Well apart from what the OP said in the first post, it's a lot more than 10 mins between Waterloo and Euston on a typical day!

For the OP, if you do the tube option, make sure you do Bakerloo Line then Victoria Line changing at Oxford Circus for a short step-free change between trains.

It must be noted there is currently no step free access to the Jubillee Line at Green Park.

I would recomend that to get to Kings Cross St P and walk would be the better option, changing from the Bakerloo to Victoria at Oxford Circus (This is a step free (ish) interchange as it's a cross platform connection.

Also, Euston Square is closer than Kings Cross St Pancras, and would only require one change at Westminster, even though it would take a while to get round the Circle. (No step free at Baker Street) although you could change onto the Met at Finchley Road.

It's a shame- though there's occasional ramp problems, other than the heritage Routemasters the entire fleet serving TfL routes is fully accessible.
