Hi all
To help with some research I'm doing, does anyone know of stations on NR or LU where "step back" drivers are used (sometimes called "new driver" or "re-provided driver")? This is where the driver of a terminating train does not take out his/her own train, but 'steps back' and takes out a following train, to reduce the turnround time.
Hope I've explained that clearly.
thanks,

London Underground (MFO unless stated otherwise):

Bakerloo line:

Elephant & Castle (all day)

Central line:
Loughton (peak hours only)

Circle line:
Edgware Road (peak hours only)

District line:
Edgware Road (peak hours only)

Jubilee line:
Stratford (all day)

Metropolitan line:
Aldgate (peak hours only)

Northern line:
Moorgate (all day until 15 May)
Morden (peak hours only)
(N.B. Early morning and late evening [empty] trains between Kennington and Kennington via Kennington loop are double-ended, i.e. with a driver at each end for rapid turn-arounds.)

Piccadilly line:
Arnos Grove (peak hours only)

Victoria line:
Brixton (all day)
Walthamstow Central (all day)

Waterloo & City line:
Bank (peak hours only)
Waterloo (all day)

Note stepping back may be altered or cancelled during disruption. Some other stations may have stepping back in operation during engineering works. Not all early morning and late evening trains step back. Peak hours roughly 06300-1030 and 1600-1900; differs from line to line. Full details are in TfL Working Timetables.

Heathrow Express. A driver works (for example) 1T30 from Paddington to Terminal 5. Another driver works 1Y30 (the return working for the set) back to Padd, while the driver of 1T30 waits at T5 and works 1Y31 which arrives at T5 as 1T31, the driver of which works 1Y32 back to Padd....and so on.

Maybe not quite what you're after, but a similar principle on a longer timescale is used at Lime Street, for EMR drivers (and guards from May?) who have a break there and work the next train back an hour later. Although there'd normally (just) be time for the necessary short break before the same train departs back, there's at least one service in the afternoon that arrives a few minutes later so needs a reduced turnaround, and this approach also makes it easier to get a late arrival back out on time with a fresh crew.

For more general interest - the stepping back is weekdays only until ~2100ish; and then only until the May TT change when HEx will finally go back to the "proper" way of working on weekdays.

From May drivers and units will stay together for several round trips; and the timetable that worked rather well between 1998 and 2019 and continued to work well on weekends since then will be reintroduced on weekdays; and the stepping back of drivers will end.

Thanks for the NR example.

I've often wondered if Merseyrail do something similar when their sevices reach Southport, Hunts Cross, West Kirby, etc.

I must be missing something - surely trains going round the Kennington loop won't be reversing as such, so what role does a driver in the rear cab (throughout) fulfil?

I think it was explained somewhere some very early trains arrive from Battersea power station and reverse round the loop then go back to Battersea. Hence only a very short time allowed in the platforms?

here it is:

Sort of similar at Southport but the crew and the unit itself step back, departing 18mins later.
All other terminal ends have the same crew going in and out.
