Yesterday we enjoyed a super trip behind Duchess of Sutherland to Scarborough. On the York - Scarborough section I noticed at one point lots of lineside metal platforms with handrails, about 8 feet long by 3 deep, at regular intervals (about 100 yards apart).

What are they for?

I asw those last time i was going to scarboro . Could they be there to offer protection to track workers . The bank is very steep there and there may not be the required space for protection when walking alongside the track

Without a picture it could be a few things. The ones that spring to mind include refuges, barriers where there are lineside equipment, temporary barriers where work is being done. The York - Scarborough line is in the middle of a big overhaul so could be new or something temporary while the work happens.

One other thing I've noticed is that it could be for a signal post telephone. A few of these new ones on the Durham Coast line have been installed, where a small area has been filled with gravel and had fencing around it.

Position of Safety provision. In areas where the cess is narrow, or indeed non-existent, POS's have to be provided at regular intervals to allow track workers to stand in a safe position as trains pass.
