Steam tour max permitted speed?

Hello all,

Just a question on something I have no idea about. I am making a Microsoft Train Sim activity on Cathedrals Express Waterloo - Portsmouth (based on the one that ran in 2003).

Now, the thing that got me stumped, how fast is the tour or the A4 actually allowed to go?
The timing from Woking Jct - Guildford on Six Bells Junction reports that it managed to do it in 7 minutes, doing 85mph made me about 2-3 minutes faster than the actual tour did..so maybe it was permitted 75?

There is a 31/4 on the back, but as far as I know that has a restriction of 90 but I don't think the tour is permitted that much. I got to Haslemere around 15 minutes early...but then is it because the tour limit is low or maybe there was something in front!

On top of the A4 (60009 Union of South Africa is the one in question), is there a set limit or does it vary (i.e is Tangmere, Clan Line, Duchess of Sutherland all permitted differentely?)

I believe all mainline steam traction is restricted to a 75mph maximum.

That's correct, although Tornado is hoped to receive a 90mph ticket because of being all new and built to higher standards

Put it like this I can do (JUST!) with a Desiro, Woking - Guildford in 6' and that uses the full capability of the train, namely Maximum acceleration & Maximum braking and that's leaving from Platform 4 at Woking (DF) & going into Platform 4 at Guildford.

You'd be hard pushed (probably impossible) to do it at the moment because Notwork Fail have got 2x 20mph TSRs in force!

So to do it with a Steam engine & LHCS would at best be described as optimistic, but more realistically called Bull****!

The majority of steam locos are restricted to 75mph, although some, such as Black Fives are restricted to 60mph.

Maybe the guy wrote the actual times wrong for Woking - Guildford..perhaps though.

He did note it took somehow 30 seconds for Richmond to Twickenham, bit of a typo on typing the times I think!

There are some other timing typos (like going back in time to pass some locations!) but is possible it took maybe 8-9 minutes, I'll see how it goes doing 75 on that section (mind of course that is based on non stop past Woking and Guildford)

The speeds steam locomotives are restricted to on the main line are, I think, determined by the size of the driving wheels, in an attempt to minimise 'hammer-blow' on the track. Larger driving wheels (express locomotives in general) get 75, mixed traffic locos 60, and I believe the main line registered '8F' is limited to 50 (though I'm not sure), as is the pannier tank (9466, I think!).

I believe 9466 is permitted 45mph only. Although, it is worth researching that! :P
