Hi,

Let's celebrate Hungary's hopefully enduring return to democracy with a short video featuring a scene I did wait for 15 years... steam at the amazing semaphore signal array in Pápa on a stormy March Saturday morning.

Great video! In the UK, we are so used to our "multiple-track" semaphore signals being mounted to a bracket or a gantry -
seeing six parallel tracks, each with its own semaphore post and arm (and all facing the same way), looks surreal to me!

Central European signalling systems generally are based on speed restrictions, not routes - that's why you don't need several signals for each point, just one (sometimes with an additional arm to indicate slower speeds) per track. Depending on country they are occasionally mounted on gantries - in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy where this type of signal originates from it was not the case, even at large stations.

But for example, there was a famous gantry at Bad Harzburg in Germany:
