Out of interest what happens if you get off the last train at a Station at night only to find out that the station had already been locked up for the night, I'm not on about mainline stations (like Manchester Piccadilly) but out of town stations.

I know this does happen as I know it happened at Rochdale station on at least one occasion when a late running service passed through only for the passengers to find that the exit had been locked up for the night, I'm not 100% certain but I seem to remember the Fire Brigade being called on this instance to free the stranded passengers

A few years ago my son and myself along with a few other passengers alighted at Haymarket late at night on January 1st or 2nd.

The service had come up from England and I believe Virgin had made a cock up as the station had actually been closed all day and services were not supposed to call there.

Someone used the emergency phone to alert the relevant people and they stopped the next Virgin Service at the station to pick us up and convey us on to Waverley.

I think there may have been no domestic services running in Scotland on the day in question hence the "cock up"

Sorry for the bump.

Does anyone know if Sheffield station is open overnight? I'm going out with a mate next Friday and with the clubs shutting at 3am, the first train is 6:20am. We may be 'slightly' worse for wear, if so would the waiting rooms be open?

Not sure about the waiting rooms, but AFAIK Sheffield station concourse has to be open 24/7 as a public right of way goes through it :)

Sheffield station is not open 24hours. It has a sign on the doors saying the doors will open at 03:15 for the 03:45am service to Manchester Airport, it shuts just after the last London St Pancras service arrives..

This is what happened the last time i was there, this was when i did the London-Sheffield service on my ALR and had to wait 2hrs outside for the 0345 service to manchester :)

I stand corrected! Presumably they lock up again after the 3:45 departs? :)

I'd assume until about 04:40/ 04:45 because there is a 0505 Northern Service to Nottingham, in this mornings case, the station would of been shut right the way through, and passengers for the 0345 to walk to the bus station and wait there, as it would of been a rail replacement bus service :)

That's one of the problems - some people think it is a right of way yet others don't. TBH the amount of times I have heard both answers I don't know what to believe anymore.

If not, Lions Lair (near Embrace) is open until 5am/6am in the morning (and free all night AFAIK).

The only definite answer for a Public Right of Way is the Definitive Map held by the relevant authority. In this case Sheffield City Council.
As is the usually the case in my experience, the map is not visible online but can be inspected by the public.
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads/travel/walking/prow/definitive-map

"The Definitive Map and Statement (DM) is the legal document that records the paths we look after. The existence on this document of a path is conclusive evidence in law that a Public Right Of Way exists. However, the reverse of this is not true; namely that if a path is not shown it does not mean that it is not public."
