Staying in Wales

My family and I are going on holiday to Wales for the first time in 2 weeks time and staying in a cottage near pwllheli. We are hoping to do the WHR and potentially other narrow gauge railways in the area, can still go and turn up on the day and purchase tickets or do we need to book in advance?
Is there any good tourist attractions in area (museums and nature trails etc)
Also, any good eating places like cafes/pubs/takeaways/bakery around the area, any show sports like football and f1?

If you don’t mind travelling slightly further afield, the Mawddach Trail from Barmouth to Dolgellau is a good walk, with superb scenery especially on a fine day.

Criccieth, Harlech and of course Caernarfon castles are worth visiting.

The walk from Tanygrisiau alongside the reservoir up to Dduallt is quite good too, taking in the original Ffestiniog Railway trackbed including the former tunnel - which can still be seen, and it’s even possible to walk inside a few yards at the southern portal.

That sounds lovely. Harlech Castle isn’t too far and Barmouth is a nice beach, both a few stops down from Pwllheli and Porthmadog on the train.

It might be a bit far from Pwllheli, but I always think a trip to Llandudno is a must when in North Wales. Pleasant coastal town, nice beach, but the Great Orme is just fantastic. You can get the heritage cable tramway from the beach all the way up to the summit, enjoy nice views of the cliffs and Snowdonia, and then go halfway back down on the cable cars, where they have a fun all year toboggan run through the Orme, and a lovely chalet cafe with nice views.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch station isn’t too far from Llandudno, and I think is on the route to there from Pwllheli. It’s also exceptionally close to Caernarthon which is where the WHR goes.

Please be aware of an increase in weever fish on Gwynedd beaches, which dwell in the sand and can suddenly rise and deliver an exceptionally painful sting. If going in the sea I’d recommend wearing slides or crocs or something.

Porthmadog FC in the JD Cymru North (Welsh football's second tier) have home league games scheduled for Friday 26th August 2022 (vs Mold) and Tuesday 6th September 2022 (vs Prestatyn). 7.30 p.m. KOs for both.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch station isn’t too far from Llandudno, and I think is on the route to there from Pwllheli. It’s also exceptionally close to Caernarthon which is where the WHR goes.

It's on the north Wales Coast line to Holyhead.
Also worth noting that other than the station having an extraordinarily long name, there is little else of interest there.
