Staying cool on a night

I hate the heat. I genuinely look to emigrate south of the equator every summer I hate it that much.

How do you all stay cool on these humid summer nights? I have a hot water bottle that's been thrown in the freezer during the day and defrosts slowly overnight... But I do find myself then struggling with my arthritis the next day!

Are there any kinds of mattresss, or pillows? I've heard of the Chillow, but I also know that gel covers don't stay cool for very long... Thoughts?

Some 15 years ago I invested in a portable air conditioning unit (around £250 at the time). I've since bought another, as the old one needs re-gassing but is fine in another room, and it was a great investment.

You get used to the noise in no time, and it means I can sleep at any time in comfort. I really recommend getting one, although the time to buy isn't when there's a heat wave - as prices get jacked up or you can't find one anywhere.

The aircon in the van doesn't work and sometimes I think that I might fix it, it dries me out though. Especially my nose.

When the weather's this hot I tend to just keep less and less on. Today though I had to move two large van loads of stuff from a lock-up to a block of flats for a customer where I then had to go across a hot car park, through countless firmly shut fire doors, up a lift, through more doors and into a flat, probably about forty or fifty times. So even though it's hot now, it is as nothing compared to that and I will use today to remind me of how hot it's possible to actually feel the next time I'm struggling to sleep.

It really annoys me how anyone can have the gall to describe this weather as 'lovely'.

You can't sleep, heyfever, heatstroke, insects, the car's like an oven, sweating, computers run slower, crowds, can't wear favourite clothes, can't get a huge amount done, harsh sunlight, noise, the family talking about their boring holiday to Spain, etc, etc.

I much prefer the winter, think I'm going to disappear to the far north of Scotland, Thurso seems nice at 14 degrees.

For the warmest of nights I also have a portable aircon unit which vents through a sheet of plywood that is cut to fit in my open window and is mostly airtight. I turn it on about an hour before going to bed to let the room cool down. When I inevitably get woken up by the racket in the middle of the night, I turn it off and use a desk fan on my bedside table instead.

One of the drawbacks of the modern loft insulation systems with a very thick layer is that the heat in the house, especially upper storeys, become unbearably hot when the outside temperatures reach these current levels..

Yes it does dry out the air and everything around it, but it's favourable to the heat and humidity. I can drink lots of fluids and use more after sun on the skin.

Yes it is hot. I am suffering and sweating like a 1970's TV star in a police interview room but it isnt that bad. Just get on with it. By the weekend it will have gone away.

Open the windows, prop the doors open, sleep naked, remove bedding, drink cold drinks, eat ice cream, buy a fan. Try to keep out of your bed room until bed time and turn off anything that might generate heat like a computer.

Having grown up in India , am used to levels of heat higher than this so can sleep despite the heat

Few Tips that I use , whether here or in India ( worked for me ,not sure if it will be as effective for others )

Allow the room to have a draught through , for at least 2 before

Roof mounted fans . We have them in all the sleeping rooms here , and for the 2 weeks of the year , during which they are needed , they are an absolute blessing

Air Con unit

Thin sheets , even fresh bedsheets , use them instead of duvets

Stay away from electrical devices or chargers

Dont sleep near lamps , and have light bulbs off

I thought it was just me....lovely weather to have to go to work in? My a**e!

Whilst I had high-amp feeds for aircon units built into our kitchen and bedroom when I refurbished, I haven't taken the plunge yet and installed them yet! It's only really a handful of nights per year that we seem to worry about this.

A fan on low, not oscillating, pointed at me from across the room has worked so far.

I always have the option to go down my cellar before sleeping - even on a day like today it maintains a fairly consistent 18 degrees.

It was pretty warm, but once I pulled the duvet off, opened the windows, and stopped moving around too much, It wasn't all bad.

Mind you, I wouldn't want to spend a summer night in Hong Kong. I've heard the nights out there are just like the same in the day: hot, humid, horrid!

While I'm fine with it during the day when I can drink lots of water to counter the issue, I can't stand sleeping in air conditioned rooms, it dries me out too much and makes a racket. First thing I do in an aircon hotel is to turn it off and open the window even if it's hot. And I try to avoid booking hotels with fixed windows.

i am from the north east. Hot for me is anything over about 7 degrees

Problem is that there will be no too cold anymore in future. Highest tempeture in NL is 38,6. They have 35,2 as a maximum untill now with thunderstorm in the west of the NL. Rather have - 20 with sunshine than + 20 with rain!

I enjoyed the hot weather whilst it lasted - especially looking back to the godawful summer of 2015 where all we had was cloudy days, consistently 15-16 degrees at most. All I needed these past few nights was a desk fan on full blast.

At night time I have slept downstairs (which has been the coolest part of my house) in the lounge either on the sofa or on the floor (with cushions). The bedrooms have been too hot to sleep in.
Here in the South East daytime temperatures have been around around 33 degrees it has been to humid to do anything. Any shopping I required has been done early morning before 1100 or late afternoon after 1700 when it is cooler. Luckily I am now retired but I remember working in London during the heatwave of 1976 when it was unbearable.
It is times like this when I lived "up north" where it is cooler.
