Status Quo's Rick Parfitt dies

2016 has taken another famous person

Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has died in hospital in Spain aged 68, his manager has said.

He died from a severe infection after being admitted to hospital on Thursday following complications to a shoulder injury.

Parfitt had been due to launch a solo career with an album and autobiography planned for 2017.

He has suffered a series of health problems including having to undergo a quadruple heart bypass in 1997.

In October, the musician said he would no longer be performing with his band after suffering from a heart attack in the summer.

I'm fairly certain Quo were my first gig and though I've never been a huge fan I did still enjoy their music, indeed I was working my way through some of them on YouTube the other day.

Yes; sad but true. In my youth it had competition with Sailor, but Status Quo was better and (maybe) pathed the way for Queen.

Personal life aside, I've not heard anyone say a bad word about the band and Rick Parfitt. I was at a friend's wedding once and it transpired his cousin use to be a drum tech for Quo. I got chatting to his cousin and wanted to know if Quo really were nice people, as they seemed to be and his response was yes. Says it all.

Rick Parfitt was about to record and release a solo album. There was talk of him doing something with the former Quo drummer and bass players, John Coghlan and Alan Lancaster. Sadly that won't happen. However the biggest sadness is for the people left behind who knew him on a personal level.

Although life on this planet is now over for Rick, he did what he loved and had a good innings, given the lifestyle he lead. His music is timeless, so it will live on.

I will certainly be listening to it for may years to come. There's a reason why I've been to over 60 Quo concerts over the years and others have done over 500, they are bloody good at what they do and their songs are so catchy.

They are a band who had many hit singles, although few number 1s, whilst having many hit albums, with several number 1s. In the UK they had 1 number 1 single Down Down. However What Your Proposin' sold more units, despite only reaching number 2. That was due to Barbara Streisand holding the top spot with Woman in Love. Albums wise though they had 4 number 1 albums. So they really covered all areas.

However they came into their own live. Most of their songs sounded better live. The atmosphere at a Quo gig was and is amazing. One feels a contention with the band, even though you don't know them personally. You feel like they want to be your friend and you theirs. Without the audience, they wouldn't exist and they know it and believe it. Something some other musicians could learn from.

At one gig I recently heard, from Glasgow 1976, Francis Rossi apologised for the band being late. It was due to a guitar problem Rick had. How many other artists would apologise for such a thing?

Quo are on their supposeied final electric tour which runs through a lot of next year. They are then going to focuse more on their acoustic concerts. Rick didn't wish to be part of that any more. He was going to do a solo album and book. Alas it was not to be.

Simply Red have done also a lot of farewall tours and they are still coming back.

Only two farewell tours. One in 84 and now this one. Although this one is billed as Last Night of the Electrics. So following it will be acoustic tours. So it's not really a fair we'll completely.

Interestingly BB King has a tour billed as fairwell but he then toured again. When asked he said he didn't bill it as such, it was the promoter. He'd since switched promoters for his then latest UK tour. Perhaps it was the fairwell tour for that other promoter.
