The Prince of Wales is next to the station in Foxfield (Cumbria Coast Line). Brews its own beer and has a range of guests, as well as whiskeys and ciders. Even better there is no lager on tap!

It must actually account for a significant portion of travel to Foxfield station - people travel to the pub rather than the town. A tradition of mine with friends on Christmas Eve from Barrow-in-Furness

I'm planning a trip over to Workington to bag the shuttles at Easter, so will make a point of stopping off if I have time. Doesn't say if it does food or not, any other places on the line for some grub?

Yeah, they do pasties of an extremely large size - they describe them as 'beer blotters' - with a few veg. Quite an experience but only recommended if you're hungry! There may also be one or two other basic but hearty pub grub things on. If you've got a few hours thenBroughton-in-Furness has a few pubs and cafes around a twenty/thirty minuted walk from Foxfield.

Alternatively between Workington and Foxfield I think the Ratty Arms at Ravenglass station has been mentioned, they may do food. I'm sure you could also east at Millom, but I wouldn't necessairily recommend getting off there as its a bit of a dump. Remember that there are no trains down that stretch of line on Sundays!

I am currently in the Jubilee Refreshment Rooms at Sowerby Bridge, they have a display of local railwayana (lots of posters, departure boards, pictures, timetables etc) on today, in case anyone fancies a visit this evening. I shall be back later on! Several real ales on too

The Knights Templar close too & sign posted from Temple Meads in Bristol is a good Wetherspoon & has 'live' arrivals & departures on the screens inside.

The frequently mentioned Brief Encounter refreshment rooms at Wymondham (Norfolk) is lovely but the nearby Railway Tavern has good ales & a superb & extensive menu.

Noticed Torquay has a buffet on the platform, complete with BR sign! Didn't have the chance to get off, but it had those nasty patio chairs outside!

They do do a good brekky. The previous owner was known locally as one of the most miserable sods. The latest tenants have kept up the good food but with a bit more charm. Unfortunatley those dreaded green plastic chairs remain.

A couple I like are close to Nottingham station, out the main entrance and to the left is Castle Rock brewery and one of its pubs, The VAT and Fiddle, and to the right you will find Fellows, Morton and Clayton and The Canalhouse (with the canal actually flowing inside the pub! All great real ale drinking holes, serving food.

Another good pub near Nottingham station is the Newshouse, same street as Fellows but in the opposite direction. Do not go in the Bentinck as it is seriously unpleasant and the beer's cr@p

I had an hour or so to kill in Nottingham on the Xmas 'Red Dot' day. Went into the Bentinck as it claimed 'fine ales' outside, only to be told when I went to the bar that they didn't have any real ale on! Walked out and ended up in the Fellows place up the road which was very pleasant.

Not on the station - but tomorrow will be sampling the Baltic Fleet, Philharmonic, Roscoe Head and Fly in the Loaf in Liverpool. Just need to find somewhere in Chester and a greasy spoon for breakfast.

Although the Pivo in York is not at the station, it does shade it over the Sheffield one, but only very slightly. I do know they now have heating in Sheffield now and that can only help, as it was freezing the last few times I visited.

Even if it is as half as good, I'll make the journey one day. The only problem I find with Pivo in York is that the beers make you p****d very quickly, but I only live about 15 minutes away from it. Now if I do the same in Sheffield, I may end up on an EMT going somehere exotic...

For the valenta fans amongst you, there is the recently opened Rat Race Ale House in Hartlepool station.
One of the smallest bars in Britain, the landlord is a keen ale fan and has four very well kept ales on tap and a proper cider.
Well worth a visit, but beware of the odd hours- opening times are geared around grand central arrivals and departures!

PS to add to the beery pleasure, grand central sell bottled Hambleton ales on board too.

Wonder how business is going at Hartlepool with all the work going on at the minute. I want to stop of one day on the spur of the moment, but I hope it isn't a football day as he has to shut as part of the conditions on the planning permission.

Hi 142094, I'm in York too, what's the name of the Wylam pub please?

Not York station, but minutes walk is Brigantes on Micklegate...and the Slip Inn with superb Wold Top brewery Falling Stone.

In London, near Euston Flyer is the Bree Louise, Coburg Street...50p off a pint for card-carrying Camra members, which brings the price of ale to non-London prices...big range of beers, some off the barrel...good fodder as well.

In Falmouth, there's the excellent Oddfellows, Quay Hill, 5mins from Town station: a tiny and friendly spot...late afternoon cheese, homemade pate and biscuits "tapas" i.e. free.

Knaresborough...the Mitre, virtually on the York bound platform...food and a good range of ale...a cracking semaphored line, York to Harrogate.

Selby has a good little buffet...friendly and homely.

Hi Caliwag,

The one in Wylam is called the Boathouse, right next door to the station. There are a few others over the bridge but not as good. It used to be the brewery tap for Wylam Brewery until fairly recently, but the tap is now the Tyne pub in Newcastle on the Quayside. Wylam is still a great bar though, well worth a visit.

Brigantes is good, as is The Maltings. Haven't been in a while, will have to get back and get some Ruby Tuesday, one of the best ciders I've ever tasted.

Don't know if it has been mentioned - but there is a Cafe' at Boston called Shunters.

It has a Bar, however would rate it more as a taxi drivers hangout!

I'm from Boston.. it's not too bad for a quiet drink (alcoholic), as it's a sandwich/coffee/alcoholic bar in the daytime, concentration on being a pub in the evening. Sometimes, you'll be unlucky enough to arrive during karaoke

Another great one in Northumberland, just up the Tyne from Wylam, is The Dyvels in Corbridge. About a hundred meters from the station.

Another mention should go to The Alma, just across the street from the station in Wondsworth.

Not strictly on't station but I forgot the excellent Boltmakers Arms, East Parade, Keighley...3 minutes walk from the KWVR/NR station (turn left, staright on). Serves the best Taylors "Best" in the land at a good price too.
Small, friendly spot with collection of 60s pop memorabilia accompanied by (quiet) 60s/70s music...better than that sounds...well worth a visit.

Great info cuccir. I visit that area often, as I have friends there. Next year I hope to have my beer drinking buddy from here in the US with me and had wanted to take him on a Tyne Valley Line pub crawl.
