The lack of a signalled move into the bay from the Down does surprise me though. I don't know when GN electric suburban services were extended to Peterborough, but the original intention was for all of them (I think?) to terminate at Huntingdon. Shunting them across to the other side via the North end of the layout would be an interesting exercise, especially with today's level of through traffic!

In fact - the earilest current crossover from the down line is immediately south of St Neots station! Clearly if the services were to terminate at Hunt-the-dog-down, they'd have to re-install the crossover that used to be there.

Huntingdon is sometimes used for unusual stops. As I said, in some engineering works weekends it was the WAGN northern terminus (IIRC - they used to run North out of the station after terminating, cross over, then back down into platform 2 for the return to London) and when there were major cock-ups on the ECML (lines down, etc...) or over-running works, GNER used to stop a few trains there on short notice. Platform 3 once even accommodated (just - with about 5 feet to spare!) a NoL Eurostar set on GNER duties.

Aberdeen. In fact there's no platform 2 either.
There used to be a 1a at Paddington - it is still visible at the country end of platform 1.
Taunton has no platform 1 - it's a disused bay.
Bristol Temple Meads - 2 is hardly used and 14 doesn't exist.
Paignton - no platform 1.

I recall relatively recently that East Coast agreed to stop at least one, though possibly two, of their trains at Biggleswade, St Neots and Huntingdon after Stevenage (I think). This was due to engineering works and a failed train, delaying things massively. It was very helpful. Passengers for those stations were told to travel in coach F... or maybe E.

up untill a couple of years ago Lincoln Central central didnt have a platform 1 only 3,4,5,6 due to 1,2 and 8 being taken out when the station was dowm scaled in the 60's i think. after re-signalling (in my opinion ruining the look of the station) all the platforms were re-numbered and now we have 1-5 ,1 and 2 being the bays at the eastern end
