Stations with names not from that location

I have just suddenly wandered why Audley End, (on the Liverpool Street to Cambridge NX line) is not called Wendons Ambo which is the villiage it is in. Audley End is a couple of miles down the road. Does anybody know why this is, and I'm sure there are other stations in the country with the same thing.

Weeton station between Leeds and Harrogate is in Huby. Weeton is a much smaller village a couple of miles to the East of Huby. Seamer station is over a mile from Seamer, between the villages of Eastfield and Crossgates, now just outlying bits of Scarborough.

Lapworth station (near Solihull) is in a village called Kingswood, the village of Lapworth is a mile or so up the road. If Wikipedia is a credible source of information, the name of the station was changed from Kingswood to Lapworth in 1902 to avoid confusion with Kingswood station in Surrey.

Birmingham International is in the metropolitan border of Solihull, the airport which the station serves is also in Solihull, with large parts of the boundary fence of the airport actually making up the border between Birmingham and Solihull.

A lot of the stations were named for the civil parish they were in, and if they named it for the hamlet or village it is in then noone would have heard of it (like Oxford is closer to Osney than the centre of Oxford, yet Oxford is known world over, and Osney is known by very few people across the UK relatively speaking)

Kings Nympton on the Tarka line is at least 5 miles away from the (very small) village it gets it's name from.
My local station Tiverton Parkway is 7 miles away from it's namesake..

You can walk just up the road and get a Bus from Oldbury Town Centre to Dudley.

Southampton Airport Parkway is in Eastleigh as is the Airport

Landywood could be a possible example.

The station is next to the distirct centre of the village of Great Wyrley.

To the locals, Landywood only refers to the housing estates to the south of the distirct centre. There is also a Landywood primary school and Landywood working mens club, but apart from that, the area is very much considered to be part of Great Wyrley.

Regarding the original post, Audley End station was named after Audley End manor, although yes it actually serves the village of Wendens Ambo and the town of Saffron Walden.

Farningham Road in Kent is around 1 mile from the village of Farningham, serving the villages of South Darenth and Horton Kirby more locally, and Pluckley in Kent is around 2 miles from the village of Pluckley, while the station is in the middle of nowhere.

More to the point, Dent Station is actually much closer to the hamlet of Cowgill rather than Dent! If anything the station should have really been named Dent Dale!

In my area around Tonbridge we have-

Edenbridge station is in Marlpit Hill

Penshurst station is in Chiddingstone Causeway

Frant Station is in Bells Yew Green

Bat and Ball station is in Sevenoaks

Wadhurst Station is in Durgates

According to the timetable I picked up in West Bromwich on Saturday, route 688 runs every 30 mins Mon - Sat daytimes from Sandwell & Dudley station to Dudley.

Probably thinking of Cross Gates in Leeds, which according to Wikipedia is why Seamer wasn't called Crossgates. However I'm unsure which one was opened first, and Wikipedia can be incorrect at times.

Milbrook station on the Bletchley-Bedford line is actually closer to Marston Mortaine, which is also a lot bigger than it and is the second largest intermediate settlement on the line after Woburn Sands.

Tring on the WCML is oddly in a village called 'Tring Station' and a fair bit outside Tring itself.

Finstock station is closer to the village of Fawler.

Bledington is slightly closer to Kingham station than Kingham.

Haddisoce is closer to St Olaves, though I do know that St Olaves had its own station once.
