Stations with a Pub on the Platform

The Barnes Wallis pub at Howden is pretty much on the station - you walk off the end of the platform and you're at the front door. I don't remember the choice of beers being huge, but the food portions certainly are.

Called in there yesterday to get a couple of teas while we waited for the train to London. Interior pretty basic to say the least, and the wooden benches outside next to the Harwich bay (and owned by the pub) were all dirty & so rotten that some of the wood had completely gone. Yuck!

It used tobe a pretty decent bar at one time serving a selction of well kept beers but it went downhill after it was refurbed and isn't somewhere you would miss a train to stayin anymore

Sad to say this is true. Back in the 70s / 80s Manningtree buffet was much smaller, much more quirky, with good grub and beer. Today it is functional, does a good breakfast (but if you can't do a fry up....) and only has Greene King beers.

I recall going to a match at Ipswich in 1992 and myself and a friend dropped off there on the way back and under estimated the power of Maldon's Blackadder. Was there recently visiting 'the Haywain' with the missus and dropped in for a pint and it was soulless with manky GK IPA as the only ale offering. I wondered 'what happened' ? ... but it seems pretty obvious - GK took it over.

Two at Marylebone, both on the concourse rather than the platforms but they are "proper" pubs. The Victoria and Albert and the Sports Grill.

Shame the service is so poor and it feels more like a cafe than a pub.

Brithdir has a club practically on the platform..and is a shorter walk to the train than at Manchester or Bristol!

Although not all the beers are £9 per pint, the Tap is still one of the most expensive pubs in Sheffield. Beats sitting in Pumpkin though!

I'd quite happily sit in the pumpkin rather than spend £9 on a pint!

St Pancras has that long champagne bar. Doesn't that count?
London Victoria has a wetherspoons upstairs with very reasonbly priced beveridges.
Don't think either of these two have been mentioned yet.

Glasgow Queen St has a Wetherspoons literally a 20 second walk from the station entrance. It was 0700 when I visited, so too soon to sample their alcoholic offerings, but their £4.70 Scottish breakfast was to die for.

The Railway Arms at Downham Market has some excellent ales. It's an award winning Boozer!

St Pancras International has a champagne bar right next to the eurostar platforms and a pub (the John Betjeman?) a short way away...........

The Betjeman Arms was a decent ale boozer. They used to have mini Beer Festivals and the ale was always in good nick. But I visited this week and it's changed.....layout and range of ales available. Not as good.

So I went across to the Parcel Yard hoping to sniff out the last of my 313's while enjoying a pint. As has been said, it is expensive!

.....and only has Greene King beers.

Yuk...that should be illegal!

The opposite of course is The Banker, which is a pub directly underneath Cannon Street platforms.

I was in The Banker on Tuesday. Had a couple at LT and then went back for tea a bit later. Good ale and grub but you can't see the trains! The Rubbish thing next door is a bit smelly when the wind lays wrong as well!

The buffet at Carlisle (between platforms 1 & 3) used to sell beer.
I've had a couple at The Local Hero on Newcastle station.
I had my one & only pint of London Pride at the Wetherspoons on Victoria. It was dreadful! Thank God for Youngs!
I had a couple on Darlington during The Great Gathering in mid-February.
I had a few at the bar on the forecourt of Glasgow Queen St Upper in 1993. I THINK it was called The Clyde Bar.

The wetherspoons at Aberystwyth (mentioned previously) is very suited, you can sit in the 'garden' and wait for the train to arrive when having a drink (or breakfast).

Good use of the old station buildings.

Nobody has mentioned the Phoenix, Denmark Hill, which became a pub following a fire in the station buildings or, unless I've missed it, most surprisingly, Lomndon Waterloo where I thought there was a Bonapartes (unless it's closed in the last couple of years.

Talking of burnt out station buildings being converted into pubs, there's also Fibber Magee's which is in the old station at Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, and had a large range of Fullers beers when I went there a couple of years ago. The line is closed at the moment (hopefully temporarily) but the track is still in situ.

Nobody has mentioned the Phoenix, Denmark Hill

Is that the one one the bridge? Had a good set of beers in when I visited a couple of years ago.

Popped into the pub upstairs in Manchester Piccadilly a few weeks ago and almost had a coronary at the prices. I'd expect higher rates at a transport hub but £9 for two beers seemed a bit OTT.

I agree.....A bit of an ambition (Pipe Dream!) of mine is to open a Micro Pub in a suitable old station building.

There was a planning application to convert part of the station buildings at Cambridge into a Real Ale Bar.......no idea what happened to that though.

At the weekend when the Tap is full of drunks and football fans I prefer to walk across to the Interchange and have a couple at the Old Queens Head. It's a Thwaites pub so normally has 3 Thwaites beers on plus a couple of guests.

Thanks, CaptainHaddock, that Old Queen's Head looks pretty much worth a visit.

Obviously, the beer range in the Tap is fantastic, but I've never found the place particularly friendly; although as a Southerner, I've only had a chance to visit it two or three times, so perhaps I've just been unlucky.

Next time I'm in Sheffield with an hour to kill, I'll give the Old Queen's Head a try......

On a recent visit to Mangapps Farm at Southminster I was pleased to find the pub sign from the old Apples and Pears pub, which used to be under the stairs opposite platforms 15-18 at Liverpool St before the station got rebuilt.

A fine name for a pub given its location.
