Stations upgrade

That last picture at Basingstoke station - have they HONESTLY got double-sided LED passenger info screens with one side facing a wall?! What a waste.

Incidentlally - has anyone seen some of the new style LED info screens? Woking has them on Platform 3, the clock is a lot smaller on the bottom, and the scrolling is smoother with the LEDs far closer together... don't know why they were replaced on Platform 3 though, as they didn't seem to have any problems?!

Agreed on Wakefield Westgate, saw some photos way back when the early 141s were there and it looks exactly the same. However I'm sure I heard recently that Metro had either secured or were seeking funding to improve it.

Sunderland is not too bad, Nexus have the plans for the refurb on their website. Just unfortunate that it'll probably deteriorate and look the same in 10 years time.

I Honestly have no idea... And it was only done within the past few months...Why some idiot from NR has decided to do that i dont know...but it really isnt very helpfull when they used to be along platforms 2/3 and where far easily readable when your standing on that platform...now you either have to check before you go through the barriers, or wander down the platforms untill you can see the screens...

But Yes... They do actually face the wall on one side:roll:

Sod the DFTs plan...Heres mine...Though slightly longer...

Wakefield Westgate...Becuase from what ive seen in pictures and words...It NEEDS REPLACING!

In Fact...Most of LOROLS stations could do with mass upgrade or refurbishment...

And in Northern Ireland...Cultra / Cultro...A station that mainly serves the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum but is also one of the most expensive places to live in Northern Ireland with houses going for er...Nothing short of £1,000,000 upwards...Recently the platforms have been smartend up, but NIR Continues to sadly ignore the supprisingly attractive Midland Railway architecture sadly falling into decline...Yet as the station serves a transport museum...youd have thought someone would try to save it and re-open it!

I completely disagree with Preston - its nice!

I personally can't believe Crewe either, Eustons platforms need to be refurbished to make them nicer and brighter!

Could I add platform 2 at Retford to the growing list as it is in urgent need of a refurb maybe now the mighty Lord Adonis is at the helm of ECML he would care to pay a visit & sample the delights it as to offer.
Would it be to much to ask for a hot water supply be provided in the toilets in the interest of public hygene & help reduce risk in the transmission of viruses.

Yeah, Ashurst has them. I prefer the older ones, the text was bigger and the clock was much easier to read.

They're supposed to be replacing them all, but I've not seen many installed yet, Totton has one on the down platform but not on the up!

I take it recent references to Wakefield Westgate really mean KIRKGATE.

The upgrading to take place shortly is very minimal involving things like improving lighting etc. Really the whole station buildings need demolition and complete reconstruction. Then it could be staffed (it handles around 10 movements per hour = 3 to Barnsley, Sheffield etc, 1 to Huddersfield, 1 to Westgate, 3 to Leeds (including 1 via Castleford) and 1 to Knottingley and 1 in from Knottingley).

However this isn't likely as the cost would be high, plus the unused and deteriorating station building is listed. Also Grand Northern plan 3 movements each way (per day) on Bradford / London next year.

I think NR have said somewhere that they are spending 3bn or so on 2000 stations over the next five years. By my reckoning that means that basically every station in the country is going to get some work done - there are 2500 stations in total and there must be 500 unstaffed halts amongst that lot which cant be improved very much!

Every one seems to be on the station revamp bandwagon now - its amazing that Adonis seems to be a Pied Piper when it comes to all things railway. If he goes next year then we will see if the tap stays turned on. For me the stations do play an integral part of the rail experience and are well overdue some tlc - maybe we can finally put right some of the wrongs from the last forty years or so.

No problem, I'm interested to see the results of it as well - also interested in how much funding each station will get and what will be done at each station.

As a daily user of Preston I can vouch for its position in the list. The station has no realistic wheelchair entry/exits, the roof leaks badly over platform 3, the location of the cafe/shop on the island platform 1 and 2 is such that overcrowding on the narrow platforms occurs too easily.

Whilst the old structures may look pretty the "information" desk is a strange glass cube hidden away on platform 3. Queues in the "booking hall" limit access into the station from one entry/exit.

It does need modernising although perhaps its inclusion in the top 10 worst is surprising. Didn't Branson recently criticise Preston station? Coincidence it's on the list?

Otherwise id add Southampton and Basinstoke on those lists...

EWS modified the canopy on Basingstoke platform 1 and Southampton had a deep wash a few years ago! or is that not quite what you meant.
