Stations far away from the towns they serve

Arundel is a long walk from the town centre.

Also, is there anything at Southese? The train I was on stopped there on my recent trip down that way and all I could see was fields!

You should take a trip to Verney Junction sometime - there's about six houses that would have been there at the station's heyday.

To be fair, the station is still in Milton Keynes....although an uphill walk for a mile to the shopping centre is in order if you get off there! I have often wondered why there isn't a free shuttle bus from station to shopping centre in my fair town.

Southampton Airport Parkway is in Eastleigh (so is the Airport).

What's the problem there? The station is partly an airport station, for which role it could hardly be any closer, and partly a regional parkway station, ideally positioned at a junction of the M27.

The airport is called Southampton Airport, so I'd say Southampton Airport Parkway is pretty damn close to what it serves. Like, a dozen steps damn close.

Worplesdon station is a fair distance from the village
and Witley is a fair walk to the point it's quicker to go to Milford

Unless you are prepared to pay extortionate car parking charges, everything is far away from Chester town centre - not just the railway station! A shuttle bus service is provided between the station and town centre, which alleviates the distance problem somewhat.

Nantwich station is actually in a very good location - it's near many of the main schools and is less than 0.2 miles away from the entrance to the town centre. (jcollins, it is 0.2 miles if you go via the back of Morrisons.)

Although Crewe station is a little far from the town centre, I can only imagine the traffic problems it would create if it was near the town centre - Nantwich road is bad enough already! hock:

The only exception is Sandbach, which is ridiculously far from the town centre. In actual fact, although it's called "Sandbach Railway Station", it's in Elworth - not Sandbach!

The fact is, no town wants a railway station slap bang in the middle of it - such a situation would create much noise from the passing trains and would severely increase traffic congestion.

Cities are a different matter...

Greenford Station is around 1.5 miles from the town centre.
South Greenford is actually North-East of the town centre, and again around 1.5 miles away.
Willesden Junction is actually nowhere close to Willesden either, it is in Harlesden which also has it's own station further up the Bakerloo.

Dent station is in the absolute middle of nowhere, its a good 5 miles away from the town.

I'll be honest and say that most of the stations between Walsall and Rugeley TV and a fair distance from the town.

Bar Walsall of course which is slap bag underneath a shopping centre and runs through the town practically

Not if you walk through the park with the canal alongside, then over the canal bridge. It is a very pleasant walk.

I mentioned this, plus Carstairs Junction (as opposed to Carstairs Village).

I think part of the problem is that some stations were originally named after something more "local" but have come to represent the whole settlement/ community/ town/ area, maybe because of cutbacks to other stations/ lines.

Surprised I've not seen Swansea or Bristol mentioned (?), that's a fair walk to the *true* city centres

i can easily do it in 5 mins

Meh, maybe I just walk slowly, but the narrow footpaths mean that it can take a bit longer (mind you, last time I walked it, I had to go at the pace my little brother set ). That probably accounts for it.

The TRAIN station is right on the outskirts of the town centre. You have to go along Market Street, then turn left and go to the end of Morton Street. The station is near to the Eureka Childrens Museum.

Halifax is similar to Preston with the bus station at the opposite end of the town centre to the rail station. In most European countries the bus station would be at the railway station even though it might be slightly out of town. Local buses would generally pass through the town centre on the way to the station.

Blackburn rail station and Blackburn bus station are about twenty paces apart. However, we want to move the bus station about half a mile away to the site of the old market :roll:! Idiots!
