Stations far away from the towns they serve

The title is a bit misleading, but I know Chester and Cambridge stations are both quite long walks to the city they serve, as are Derby and Stoke (though the actual city centre there is in Hanley...). Anyway, are there any more that you guys can think of?

If you think Chester is a long walk from the city centre then you obviously haven't used Sandbach station.

Mobberley station is a long way from the centre of the village.

Northwich station isn't particularly close to Northwich town centre, although it is in a useful location for much of the neighbouring place of Rudheath.

Both Crewe and Nantwich stations are around 1 mile south of their respective town centres.

Hereford station isn't exactly in the city centre.

I'm sure there's hundreds of examples.

Hope (between Sheffield and Manchester) is a fair walk on a summer's day, but then its not a massive place.

People complaint about Sheffield station being a way from the centre of the city, but I think this was more to do with the hill/ need to cross the ring road (much prettier now) than the distance per se

Carstairs station is in Carstairs Junction rather than Carstairs Village - the station was some way from the original village, but a new settlement crept up around the railway (if that makes sense)

Rochdale always seems a fair walk (which the tram will replace the need for, one day)

Chapel-en-le-Frith is demoralisingly far away from the centre of the town.

Neither station in Marple is really central and I think it's similar with New Mills.

Southampton Central is a walk up a big hill to get to the city centre. Southampton Airport Parkway is in Eastleigh (so is the Airport).

Cheltenham Spa is quite a way from the town

As is Thatcham.

I know when we go through it on the way to and from London, it looks like it is in the middle of nowhere but Cheddington station?

And I can vouch for the walk for Chester!

Isn't the new station entrance / building at Newport (South Wales) at totally the wrong side of the tracks for the city? I know the old entrance was quite a short walk (and about 50x better)!

Carlton station (Nottingham-Lincoln) is located on Netherfield "High Street" and Netherfield station is located in Colwick

Bodmin Parkway is literally miles outside Bodmin and Leighton Buzzard station is actually in Linslade, some distance from Leighton town centre.

Very few of the local WCML south stations are near the town centre; Tring, Cheddington, Hemel, Apsley, Kings Langley are all far away from their namesakes.

My local station (Thirsk) is in the village of Carlton Miniott, over a mile away from the town centre.

There isn't really a settlement called Gleneagles, the station itself if a couple of miles from the hotel, and a good 3 or 4 from Gleneagles House and the end of the glen.

Lairg Station is 2 miles from Lairg.

On the Settle-Carlisle and Leeds-Morcambe lines there are a few, Kirkby Stephen, Clapham, Hellifield. Dent station is in the absolute middle of nowhere, its a good 5 miles away from the town.

Glenrothes with Thornton is probably 3 or 4 miles from the centre of Glenrothes. Markinch Station is closer to Glenrothes than Glenrothes station.

Tring is a particularly long walk, yes. Passing through in the car, "Tring Station" actually has it's own sign, akin to those entering a town or village. Almost as if Tring Station is a separate settlement!

Hykeham (lincoln to nottingham line) is actually closer to the doddington park area of lincoln, the closest town centre with the name hykeham is north hykeham almost 2 miles away. Although by a matter of yards the station is in the north hykeham town boundry.

dunfermline town centre is a good 10-15 minute walk up a bloody steep hill away from dunfermline 'town' station.

Coventry is also a fair trek away from the city centre as well, not that i'd go there willingly again :roll:

St Helens junction is about a mile from St Helens - though i do know they have one in the town centre but this would mean going to huyton to double back on yourself if you were coming from Earlestown direction.

Ramsgate is a bit of a walk into the town centre too

Technically not Bodmin given that it was called Bodmin Road.

On the ... Leeds-Morcambe lines there are a few ...

One of those being Silverdale - which I used some 20 years go while walking in the area trying to catch the Morecambe Bay tidal bore. I didn't realise that it came from the sky that day

Bearsted (a fair trek to village centre in itself) supposedly being the station for Leeds Castle:

Gatehouse of Fleet station, now closed. on the Dumfries - Stranaraer line, was a considerable distance outside the town. Not sure exactly how far - 7 or 8 miles?

Opening the forum on my phone just now was positively spooky! We are on a day out and I've just been driven from Abergavenny town centre to the station, to show me how far it is in case I ever want to go there by train (from Hereford). It was a good couple of minutes drive, so probably over a mile.

Howden is out in the countryside, about a mile from the edge of the town.
