What is the cleaning / maintenance routine for the e-ticket scanners attached to ticket barriers? I've found no end of barriers, usually on busier stations such as Birmingham New Street, that won't scan e-tickets, which on closer inspection of the glass above the scanner reveals it's filthy, which would explain why it won't scan the QR code...
Regarding the quote below, no doubt following the revenue block, Southeastern proceded to remove the tape and made no effort to ensure no adhesive/residue from the tape remaining to then gather dust/debris on the glass...

Indeed. And I have also seen Southeastern tape over the e-ticket scanners at stations and funnel everyone with an e-ticket through to a manual scan.
