Station Staff wanna be needs help

Hi all

I leave School VERY VERY soon (thank god) and i want to go get a job in the rail industry, im predicted to get C`s all round and when i leave i want to work on the station, so im pleading with you do you know of any Jobs in the West Midlands that involve being on the station, i dont mind what i do on the station (not cleaning though) weather it be Dispatch, Helping coustomers or just walking about making sure its all tickity boo :d

I WOULD be willing to travel out of the Mindlands but only as far as Crewe-Derby-Shrewsbury etc..

who ever points out a job i PROMISE you`ll get immunity when you visit the stations (so no hassle off other staff )

Dispatch is safety critical so probably 18yo.

Not many jobs on the railways at 16. My advice, get some qualifications ready for when you are 18 leaving you something to fall back on.

I believe there is a vacancy with Northern at Manchester Oxford Road at the moment, but that may be too far away. Best keep your eyes on www.northernrail.org and see what comes up, I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Safety Critical work i.e Dispatch and most platform staff are 18+ age limit.
Better to go to college or study A levels for a higher chance of getting shortlisted.
It took me 3 years to get onto the railway since I first applied in 2006. Patience and perseverance is key.

Honest advice here, and I started on the railway at 15, even though it was just a "school liason officer".

First of, qualifications. Not a big requirement. GCSEs are more than adequate, particularly A*-C. Seeing a customer service NVQ would always be a good start though. Even if you don't do so well, as long as you make it clear you're willing to work towards qualifications/attend Union Learning courses, that shows real enthusiasm.

The problem with the railway is that your unlikely, if at all, going to get a job unless you have had customer facing/problem solving/communication experience- regardless of age or qualification. You're working in a pretty unique environment on a day to day basis so it's essential you know what you're doing- especially in Safety Critical positions.

As we have some younger members here on the forum, I'll sort of give you guidance towards age and restrictions, (at least on Merseyrail, generally same sort of level throughout though).

At 16:
Station Assistant - (barrier line, getting ramp for wheelchairs, making annoucements, cleaning). You will (MUST) not dispatch trains, work nights or handle cash.
Within Merseyrail there is no other position you could fill unless you wanted a low-level desk job, (secutary or similar), in Rail House HQ.

At 18:
Station Retailer: Sell tickets, clean station, (litterpicks, vomit, urine etc), give a good level of customer service and assist disabled passengers, e.g. with ramp etc...

Ticket Inspector: (RPI). Very unlikely to be taken on until mid 20s, but officially it is possible to be taken on at 18. Penalty fares, checking tickets onboard trains, static at stations. Also providing assistance during busy times at main stations.

Guard (not Conductor) Merseyrail only have guards, there is no contractual requirement for any revenue duties to be taken out, and from next week when the PF area is extended in Cheshire, no ticket checks etc will take place by guards. You will be expected to keep the train tidy, open/close doors and assist in an emergency.

They're the main jobs- you're probably not going to come onto the railway as anything else at first.

Notice, however, that cleaning/tidying is a part of all the jobs.

Most railway employers now specify that you must live within 30mins of your home station, that meaning the station you would normally be rostered to work. Therefore someone in Liverpool applying for a job in Manchester would be rejected immidiately.

Yes its C at GCSE level

I think it would be fair to say that in recent years, jobs in the railway industry have been very competitive, and I think given the competitiveness in the job market at the moment, it will be even harder to get a job on the railways.

As stated above, I think the best advice would be to get a job somewhere (preferably dealing with customers) before attempting to join the railway; although it all depends how well you do at the interview.

Dealing with the public isn't all roses and happiness. A customer service course might be useful but I doubt it will prepare you for the real joys of drunks and weirdos!

Working with the public can be a very mentally challenging job.

Chances are, if it's badly written, with spelling mistakes and bad grammar, they won't bother reading it to find out about grades and other things, just throw it in the bin straight away.
