Station security staff - Midlands

Hi all,

Does anyone know the reason (unless it's a "can't be shared" one) for increased security staff on stations in the Midlands of late? I've noticed, on numerous occasions, security staff at West Midlands Railway operated stations such as Sandwell & Dudley and Wolverhampton, and then this evening at Stafford (Virgin Trains operated - Black Diamond security on this occasoon). Is there a particular reason for this?

Ah. Sad that's the case if so. That would explain the security guy at Stafford being very hot on "behind the yellow line" (in that they appeared to be asking people to stand back for a train passing on the opposite platform - though, to be fair, there was one due on this platform, just not for a minute or two).

To be fair to them, the rule is that you should only ever cross the yellow line if you are doing so to board or alight from a train. At all other times you should be behind it, regardless of what is or isn't passing. It isn't just to prevent people being clouted by trains, it's also to reduce the risk of falls onto the track.

The new Virgin Trains "Travelsafe Officers" in Crewe seem to spend all their time hanging around the ticket barriers. I was told it was due to an increase in anti social behaviour.

I know that LNWR has employed more staff for suicide intervention further south on the West Coast

The Black Diamond security guards at LNWR stations south of MKC are indeed “suicide prevention officers” - I believe there have been multiple interventions which have saved lives at various stations from what I’ve heard at work.

The stations along the DC / Bakerloo line also have anti suicide guards and I believe the GEML too?
