station revamps

As a distant member (I currently reside in South Africa) my main contact with the railway industry is via the rail media. Every publication seems to contain news of upcoming major station redevelopments but very few seem to come to fruition. Can anybody provide information on current and proposed station revamps including but not exclusively the schemes at Luton, Euston, Peterborough, Stafford, Crewe et al. Also which stations are in direst need of some tlc - my vote is always for Severn Tunnel Junction which even in my days as a lad was a bleak desolate spot.

Also how is the new look Derby coming on?

Euston I'll be at in a couple of days so I'll have a quick look then. Derby is starting to look well actually. Only thing is the amount of working platforms is ridiculous, but I suppose it'll be much easier to move around after the upgrade

Crewe (station move) has been sunk with parties now looking at doing some roof works
Derby is to receive extra refurbs once this work is done
Peterborough and Stafford are on the backburner at the moment

Sunderland station seems to have been in line for a revamp for as long as I can remember. :cry: They have managed to put an esculator in, but it seems to have taken them a year to do even that. It has been in need of a revamp ever since the germans redesigned it 65 years ago.

I think you will find the Germans took the 'brutalist' method of architechture to a new level!!! Saying that a couple of Heinkels would have made a better job of redesigning stations than most 60's architects -what were they thinking of at Stafford and Peterborough not to mention New St and Euston is beyond me!

I forgot that Sunderland had a revamp for the world cup back in 66. It seems a shame as in old photos it looks such a decent station. Now its just a dump, such as pity as just north of the river is Monkwearmouth station, unfortuently its closed as its 200 yards in the wrong position, but its architechture is quite good

Luton is still at the proposal/planning stage as part of an overall town centre redevelopment scheme. It's definitely not starting this year since the bulk of the whole scheme requires certain pieces of land (including the station car park) to be released by a new multi storey car park, which is currently under construction between the station and Midland Road.

Thank God I live closer to Luton Airport Parkway - speaking of which, a new station entrance on the Up side is planned as part of the redevelopment of the old Vauxhall factory site, although that's on the backburner for most of this year due to the recession.

Have Vauxhall called it quits in Luton now? Luton station is crying out for some TLC but as always there are many different interests involved and many pipers to be paid - I am always amazed at how long these regeneration programmes can take.

They ceased production there although their UK HQ is still located off Osborne Road (and even that may change in the short/medium term). Sister company IBC Vehicles continue to produce Vivaro vans in Luton though.

Luton station needs more than TLC, it needs to be rebuilt (or are they the same thing anyway?) - I can't remember the extent of its redevelopment off the top of my head, but I do know that its been on the regeneration agenda for a decade if not longer.
