What is unique about Platform 5 at Derby, it's something recent to give a clue?

It's a bay platform?

Not unique to the network of course but it is the only bay at Derby isn't it?

If it's the bay, then it's also unusual (although not unique) in having faces on both sides of the single track. Not a recent feature tho.......

I have no knowledge of what's unique on those other platforms, but I'm fairly sure it's unique to the network, so two facing platforms is not unique either. Keep guessing. I'll repeat, the unique feature is a new thing.

I haven't been to Derby recently, so I'll have to throw in the towel I'm afraid.

It looks like you and everyone else has too. I'll see if there's any more responses when I get home, just after 11. If not, I'll post out the answer then.

Well, there's been no more guesses. The answer is that units with doors at the extreme end of the vehicle, such as 153,156 and 158 have to release their doors on the platform 6 side. Whereas units with doors towards the centre have to release the doors on the platform 4 side. This is because when they rebuilt the bay, they of course made a mess of it. So you have the bizarre sight of a 170 releasing doors on one side, with the traincrew walking down the other, and the other units releasing their doors on the opposite side of the bay. What a bunch of clowns.

Well, due to their cock up, it means there's huge gaps between the stepboards if you open the turbostar doors on the same side. The likes of Telford, Brunel etc. would be spinning in their graves, it's just a platform, and all they had to do was copy the old one, the track wasn't relayed or anything.

It happens at Sheffield on Platform 7 where different units release doors on different sides. Northern 142's and 158's release their doors on the side facing Platform 6 where all the signage and departure boards are but EMT Meridians release their doors on the side facing Platform 8 as the Platform 6 side isn't long enough.

Not too difficult is the answer. But height isn't the issue, it's the distance across from the stepboards to the platfor ege
