Station pubs (part two?)

Technically it’s next to the station, but the Railway Arms at Culham is a fine place for a post meeting pre shack bash pint while watching the trains go by.

I stayed there whilst doing some bashing at Didcot Parkway back when the HSTS were still zooming up and down to/from Paddington

The rooms were comfortable breakfast was great I had a few beers and evening meal that was great aswell

The Prince of Wales opposite Didcot Parkway station does excellent food tasty and good portions reasonably priced and beer is kept well thus making it a good pint

At Exeter Central, Topsham Brewery's excellent Scapegoat tap will be joined this weekend by the reopened Angel over the road from the Queen Street entrance. It's now renamed The Engine House with a railway theme, although the snippets shown online so far look somewhat ersatz.

Did Carlisle last week- excellent - both beer and atmosphere.

I do agree, along with the offering at Lancaster station. I've just finished a 14-day ALR, which included six homebound journeys from Euston to Bolton. Due to my intolerance to Manchester Piccadilly, I always left Euston aboard the xx:30 Glasgow train as far as Lancaster, then had a couple of pints of Lancaster Black, followed by a short trip back to Bolton with TPE. The only way to enjoy First Class travel.

A great find in the last two weeks (three visits), The White Lion in Leominster. It is a couple of minutes from the station, serving excellent beers from Hereford Brewery; HPA is my choice.

I also noticed, but did not visit, the Brewery by the line into Ludlow, a short walk through the adjacent Aldi car park. It seems to have good opening times throughout the week and is now "penned in" for a visit.

A 2 minute walk from Twyford, The Golden Cross is a handy place for the station, and in the latest CAMRA Good Beer Guide. 3 Timothy Taylor ales on when I visited yesterday, though Landlord was off.

Especially handy if travelling from Henley to London as you have to change trains anyway, and platform 5 the Henley platform, and platform 4 for the London trains are both next to the exit to the station, with no barriers.

Am looking at a future trip to Tooting for drinks. There appears to be four pubs between Broadway and Bec the Wetherspoons, The Castle, Kings Head and the Wheatsheaf. Are they good for real ale?

The Spoons is, well, a GBG listed Spoons and therefore fairly predictable. The King's Head and Wheatsheaf seem to score OK on the CAMRA website although the former is Greene King. The one I would also suggest going to while in that area is the GBG listed Antelope, just down Mitcham Road from Tooting Broadway station, and worth the walk.

The Antelope is a great shout. Most of the pubs in Tooting have been gentrified to within an inch of their lives in the past ten years or so, unsurprisingly, but the Antelope is definitely one of the best options. I still mourn the old Castle -- used to be a proper old school boozer.

I definitely wouldn't recommend going to the 'Spoons (J.J.Moon's) -- I've seen people pee themselves on the seats before!

I can cope with leaky pubs, but leaky punters are another thing entirely !

An update - probably counts as a "station pub" as it's visible and just across the way, but in Bolton the Sweet Green Tavern has been closed for a while (maybe a year) and it's up for sale at around £200k; it's supposed to be retained as a pub but who knows? Even a pub/restaurant would be better than nothing, think it's owned/leased by Heineken. There's definitely a local will for it to re-open, but being where it is with the area now a shopping outlet than former works, would it survive??

There is Piggy's opposite the station, with a small amount of bottled beer (better than the tap IMO!) and on the station itself the shop (which closes around 6) does have a small amount of cans available (don't know if there's any real ale in bottles) and the thought we might get a station pub on p4/5 seems to be long gone.

If you go on the CAMRA website it will tell you which pubs in Tooting ( or wherever you search for) are cask ale or not. If you are a CAMRA member it lets you log in and tells you if the cask beer has scored well or not so well etx if youre not CAMRA it won't.

I left CAMRA just over 20 years ago after I disagreed with some of their policies.
Generally I use TripAdvisor to look up pubs, it’s not ideal but it hasn’t let me down yet.

I'd say for full access to the website (for pubs information) ansd £30 worth of vouchers (Spoons, and a few others) each year, plus discounts in most Fuller's* and Greene King pubs, it would pay for itself for you to rejoin regardless of policies.

*20% off a pint in places like the Parcel Yard (King's Cross), the Doric Arch (Euston) and the Mad Bishop & Bear (Paddington) makes those places competitive with the nearby Spoons!

I agree things have moved on in 20yrs and the reasons I left are no longer relevant. I might reconsider it at some point.
