Station pubs (part two?)

I will get there some time (last time I stopped off that way was the depths of winter and it was closed).

I'm assuming that for Yeovil Junction, the station buffet is the stop !

Oh I’m not sure about Yeovil Junction. When I ticked the Yeovil Spoon I think I got a taxi from the town centre. Done it a couple of times since but on the GWR diverts.

It commenced in 2024 as part of a wider refresh with the other Devon and Cornwall trails. You can also get yourself a T Shirt too after collecting 10 stamps.

Just be wary that the Exeter Brewery Tap is only open Thursday and Friday and its best to ensure that you get there for around 5pm, as I once went and the place was closed not realising that if its quiet they close early.

Camra don't like it because it's keg beer served through a hand pump, a scheme devised by the Danish brewery Carlsberg after acquiring the breweries formerly owned by Marstons.
Daniel Thwaites don't like it either because they use the logo " a breath of fresh ale" to describe their cask- conditioned beers on their hand pumps. There's little they can do about it though because Carlsberg distribute Thwaites beers to Thwaites pubs.

I've just been in a bar with what appeared to be hand pumps but are clearly taps as the bar man just pulled the tap and left it to pour (it looked wrong). Is this what you're talking about ?

If so, that's definitely not the case for the waiting room at Carnforth as they physically had to pump the ale.

It's not quite as simple as that. Real ale can be pumped electrically, or by air pressure (as is often the case in Scotland) providing no carbon dioxide (or other gas) comes into contact with the beer in the process. It's all to do with whether the ale is conditioned in the pub cellar, or in the brewery (i.e. keg). But I fear we're straying off the topic of Station pubs (as opposed to Station real-ale outlets).

Thornbridge have just applied to Hull City Council for a license for their new Hull Tap pub in the old Victorian ticket hall, the plans look really good! Its taken long enough!

Had my first visit to the Station House at Annan today. Nice wee pub and very friendly....but sadly no real ale.

For those who don't want to take out a second mortgage to buy a pint in Reading at the Oakford Social Club or the Three Guineas right by the station, the Gateway on Greyfriars Road reopened last year as the Railway Tavern. Only a 60-second walk from the station, and pints that start with a 5, which is nice.

Fair point chap. Horses for courses, I guess. I prefer the beer in the Railway, and they have all sports channels on many TVs as well. Decent pool table too.

More than sixty seconds at my age especially from the Brunel Arcade entrance. Even longer from the Elizabeth Line platforms. But if you are that desperate for a pint.... I prefer Wetherspoons.

Correct....in fact the only bet! We went there next.

This afternoon we've had our first visit to Lancaster Brewery's new Scott and Brassey pub on Carlisle station. The internal restoration and the beers were equally impressive.

Technically it’s next to the station, but the Railway Arms at Culham is a fine place for a post meeting pre shack bash pint while watching the trains go by.

The Manx Electric Railway is good for pubs located at the three principal stations:

Douglas Derby Castle - Terminus Tavern
Laxey - Mines Tavern
Ramsey - Fynoderee Distillery and Bar (they do sell beer as well as spirits).

Fynoderee can be seen in this view taken at Ramsey. One could get easily inebriated spending a day on the MER if not careful!

One of a rare breed these days - a real 'locals' pub! In a pleasant location overlooking the village green. Ably run by enthusiastic Gill and her staff.

On entry to the right the small but lively public bar is warmed in winter with a roaring fire and jukebox. A dartboard is adjacent to the window and a well used skittle alley leading off.
