Barnsley is the only one that didn't used to have a suffix due to the presence of another station?
No - sorry.
The present "Barnsley" station was originally called "Barnsley Exchange"
But continue thinking about the other/now closed] stations in the towns/cities mentioned, and the companies which served them.

Yes, you've almost got it!

All four had competing stations [now closed], belonging to other railways.
What were Barnsley Exchange, Rugby Midland & Nottingham Midland had competition from the Great Central/LNER - Barnsley Court House, Rugby Central & Nottingham Victoria.
Wolverhampton High Level was the odd one out as it had competition from the Great Western at Wolverhampton Low Level.

It used to be just alongside its current position. The original site is now occupied by the Magistrate's Court.

I had forgotten about the short-lived Carrington St station.
However, I don't think it provides an alternative answer, for, along with Barnsley Exchange, I don't think Wolverhampton High Level has moved either [redeveloped in 1965, yes], but not actually moved site - unless you or someone else knows differently!!

If I'm ''near enough'' I'm guessing that either means it's open floor or my go, so I'm going to go if that's ok with everyone?
My four are Stockport, Gatwick Airport, Walsall and Wolverhampton.
Think post-privatisation services.

See the above clue, where I say Wolverhampton has only retained this direct connection in one direction. All the other three have lost it since privatisation. For a further clue I'll say that Walsall lost it the most recently, only this December just gone. Stockport was some years before, and Gatwick was the first to lose it.

I'm amazed by this, I thought I'd get knocked for making it too easy.
To summarise the clues already given, it's direct links with a station, Wolverhampton is the odd one out, having retained it in one direction only, Walsall lost it in 2012 (only had it in one direction), Stockport a few years earlier and Gatwick several years before that.
If someone can tell me the station they'll be the winner and then I'll give the actual wording.
