Anyone know of any station improvements/projects planned anywhere, or where I could find a document containing them :D Thanks

The station improvement plans from the £150m (?) or however much it was DfT pot for "medium stations" announced last year have now been finalised and are circulating internally, presumably won't be long before the full details go public, saw a poster up at Colchester announcing it yesterday aswell (but lacking in the detail)

The Network Rail website will have loads, too many to list. Either that or look at local government/PTE websites. Local Transport Plans normally have a good amount of info to start, then you can look for the closer detail from there.

Sunderland has been done, Man Vic is about to start, Waverley and Gourock are underway and BNS/KX are in the middle of long term rebuilds. Newport is also about to be declared done. I believe Swansea also has plans for work to be done next year.

soon wakefield kirkgate (argueably the most delapidated station) and normanton will get improvements.
kirkgate will get new canopys, a foot bridge and the island platform spine wall will be taken down.

normanton will just get a foot bridge

As far as I know the track and platforms remain the same, the concourse / booking hall will get a long overdue rebuild and - controversially - a massive block of flats will be built over it and will extend down a lot of the south side of the station ( current car park areas ).

Not clear if this will extend over the platforms or not.

One member of staff has told me he believes the canopies will not be replaced. I hope this is true because the two southernmost pillars on platform 4 still exhibit wartime shrapnel damage; there is not a lot of that sort of thing left - it would be a pity if this was lost. ( The Railway Heritage people have been made aware of these two pillars but no idea if they will designate them or not yet ).

Interesting. I think that Network Rail have an aspiration to run 10 car trains on all SWT suburban services and the South London RUS identifies the platforms at Epsom as being in need of lengthening/remodelling (the date given is 2012-2014 for this work).

Epsom will be quite a challenge to remodel given the bridges, junctions and crossovers north and south of the station. I suppose the easiest/cheapest way of doing it would be to abolish the cross-platform interchange between SWT and Southern, so that Platform 3 became down Waterloo and Platform 2 became up Victoria. (Platform 1 would remain down Victoria and Platform 4 up Waterloo.) You'd then have scope to extend the platforms northwards by adding/replacing the bridges, and it would be possible for the Waterloo and Victoria sides to be lengthened separately and independently.

controversially - a massive block of flats will be built over it and will extend down a lot of the south side of the station ( current car park areas ).

Presumably the sale of the flats and letting of the retail units is necessary to fund the rest of the upgrade...

Starlight, yes - they could do that but the platform curvature may be a problem ( ever seen the gap between platform and train about 3 - 4 cars down platform 4?! ); extending noerthwards would produce an even worse curvature.

It would at least avoid everything entering platform 2 being held for up to 3 minutes for a departure off platform 3 to cross though!

If they are extending the platforms, there is room to do it southwards; only one bridge ( West Hill ) involved and plenty of width there as that is towards the turnback sidings - a bit of reworking the points and crossovers should easily allow an extension; the platforms are almost long enough already, at least 3 and 4 are anyway; 1 and 2 are slightly shorter but I'm sure you could get 9 cars in them as it is.

So extending to 10... yes, feasible - at the south end.

The reason for the controvery over the flats is threefold:

1) The plans involve kicking the taxi rank and pick up / frop off over to the opposite side of the road from the station - and further away from the entrance as well.

2) The sheer height of the block of flats - at least as high as the flats opposite, but don't forget the north side of the station is on an embankment so these new flats will really tower over the housing on the north side.

3) The poor architectural merit of the flats; they will be even worse, apparently, than the horrible one immediately opposite the station, which many residents describe as a product of the Iron Curtain prison block school of thought - not helped by the council insisting on the colour scheme they are painted in! ( Compare it with the much better colour and style of the similarly sized block next door - opposite the south ends of the platforms! ).

Hmmm, well if money was no object then having the same facilities on Platform 1 as there is on Platform 2 and 3 would be a start, there's plenty of room as Platform 1 was built to the same spec as Platforms 2 and 3, might even be nice if the DfT could make Platform 1 DDA friendly with a barrow crossing but the least that will happen is a lick of paint.

Still, the main stations which outer suburban services usualy call at are Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill, Enfield Chase, Gordon Hill, Cuffley and Hertford North, ensuring these platforms were lenghthened to take 8 cars would mean at the very least that if 8 cars had to be diverted that way they had the option of calling at some or all of these stations.

What are they doing to Altrincham. Nopefully building a massive wall on the island platform so train passeners dont have to look at the awful, filthy, disguisting trams.

Mainly a new more centralised footbridge from the bus station across the platforms to the other side with access down on the centre island, demolishing old one. Entrance on east side where there will be a new office development

Also
Demolishing old pedestrian overpass over the road and bus station to town centre
Replacing the wooden canopies with glass ones (keeping the support columns)
Platform renewals
Reconfiguring the Bus station roads/bays layout, seems to be only one through road with more pedestrianisation including around the clocktower, the existing taxi rank around the clocktower moved slightly. A drop off point and cycle lockers added.
Shortening the Metrolink bay platforms slightly for a new street level access and landscaping on the south side of the station.
New ticket office (GMPTE Travelshop)
New toilets including disabled and baby changing toilets, Waiting room
Cafe
