Wikipedia is often inaccurate. I found it interesting to see this written there -

St. Johns station is built on land originally owned by the nearby St. Johns Church, from which the station derives its name. Due to an archaic agreement, South Eastern Trains must make a small donation to the church every time a train stops.

Is that indeed true? Sounds rather far-fetched to me...

cheddington has something simular

when the wcml was built, it had to pass through some private land belonging to some lord/duke, the only way he would let them build the line through his land is if they put a station there, and a certain amount of trains stop there a day, and up until this day this still applies.

I'll bet he would not be too happy at the current service that Cheddington receives, only one train an hour off-peak whereas it was was two an hour until fairly recently. Plus you will now need to change if requiring Apsley, Kings Langley, Bushey or Harrow & W <(

Similar things occured on the Great Central Main Line, the Lord Lanesborough got the line rerouted through the northern part of Leicestershire to run a few miles further east and also stipulated a station be built at Swithland (which never was built), and the family who owned the land above Catesby Tunnel also didn't want to see trains on their land, hence Catesby Tunnel's existance which would otherwise be a deep cutting.

Stockport too. Only allowed the viaduct to be built if all trains stopped there.

There was the same type of situation on one of the Branch Lines in Kent, many years ago, before it was sadly ripped up. I can't remember which one it was though. May have been the Elham Valley Line, from Folkestone to Canterbury, but I could be wrong.

Since no source is quoted for this statement I have removed it.

The same with Lord lichfields estate at Shugborough Hall due to the fact the railway runs under it one of these had to be built by the railway http://waterortontrains.ukgeeks.co.uk/p52129722.html
There also used to be a line in Essex that went through the grounds of a Lords manor so he aggreed the railway could be built aslong as a station was built for him and any train he requested had to stop the day he died the station was demolished.

Also as these problems with sceptic landowners are mainly why finding a striaght section of the WCML is almost impossible.
