I believe this is because the station was named Kirkby Stephen West (signifying the fact that it lies at least a mile outside the town itself). If you want the history, the reason for bypassing the town centre was primarily because had the railway followed the valley nearer to Kirkby Stephen the gradient heading south would then have been considerably steeper, and the concept of the S & C as a main line to Scotland was rather important at the time.
I would have considered Kirkby Stephen to be either KKS or KBS.
