Isn't this the most pointless game? You just type the code into national rail journey planner and it tells you the station? Isn't that why everyone is getting them immediately correct?! Even if its against the rules it seems a little easy. And yet there is 60 odd pages of it!!! Hey, what do I know, I'm missing the point of it clearly! Carry on....

Admittely, this is a problem. But on October 29th, the game will be six months old, making it my most ever succesful thread! :)

.....And I thought that my signature signified that I was the biggest cynic on the forum.......evidentially I was mistaken

If you look on this particular page, there is not an "immediate" response to the clue that was previously set. Anyway, for those willing to incur the wrath of this pedant, SFL still remains the clue to be solved.

Seconded. The first few pages on here are played in a good manner (i.e. no instant correct answers), yet recently I cannot think of a code that has taken more than 2 / 3 guesses. Most are instant TBH.

I would draw your attention to the very first page on this thread if you are concerned about the speed on answers, which contradicts your comment above.

If you go foward in time and now look on this particular page at the time that an answer was given from the setting of a clue, the time period was most certainly not instantaneous, by any means. The member who set up the quiz, HST Power, has made a posting concerning his feelings after the posting by Barrett M95 was made, earlier today, so that should have sufficed on the matter. If you wanted to express your reservations on his quiz, you should have sent a PM to him, referring to his posting on the matter earlier today, so as the quizmaster, he could have made a decision to carry on with the quiz.

There is no compunction on the part of any member to enter any quiz and if you feel that the quiz does not meet your expectations, then just ignore it and use your undoubted expertise elsewhere on the forum. Do I take it that your quote above gives TBH as the next clue, as Temple Meads has already set EMD as the next clue to solve, which still remains unanswered.

Paul, I think "TBH" is an abbreviation for "To Be Honest". But correct me if I'm wrong.

Speaking for myself, I had no intentions of PM-ing the originator as I see that as less relevant to my original question which was to gauge he opinionS (plural) of those who take part. This is a forum after all. I think HST Power came up with a fine idea for a quiz in principle (but seems too easy online) so no disrespect intended to him. I maintain that I am baffled by the apparent ease with which anyone can answer the questions. The instantaneousness of the replies isn't chronologically related but the number (or lack of) guesses each time which to me suggests competitors are simply using an online service such as nationalrail.co.uk. You'll note that most of the time the answer is given and they immediately provide their next suggestion implying that they already knew their "guess" was correct.

Don't get me wrong - I am not deliberately spoiling it for others as my second or third posts show - I blatantly "cheated" by using the national rail app on an iPhone to work out the previous clue and immediately posted my (rather easy) reply (after all, I knew i was correct!) to keep it going for those who are participating. No hostility intended - merely curiosity.

Backseat modding are we? ;)

OK, take this as an example - http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=801736&highlight=okehampton#post801736. How it only took someone 31 mins to work out that amazes me. X = bus link, fair enough, but I can see absolutely no logic or deduction in getting CG to be Okehampton!

Also, take for example KNG. Could be King's Lynn, Kingham, Kingston, Knighton. How come no one ever got one such example wrong recently? Why are all answers given with such conviction, so much so that we don't even wait for confirmation?

The very first five clues set on the quiz and solving time were as follows:-

1st clue.....Set at 1843.....Answered at 1845.....Total of 2 minutes
2nd clue....Set at 1845.....Answered at 1849.....Total of 4 minutes
3rd clue.....Set at 1849.....Answered at 1849.....Total of NIL minutes
4th clue.....Set at 1849.....Answered at 1857.....Total of 8 minutes
5th clue.....Set at 1857.....Answered at 1857.....Total of NIL minutes

Anyone can refer to the start of this quiz thread to check my figures. It is not true to say that the earliest clues were not solved quickly.

My posting was not addressed to you, as HST Power had already responded to your posting. My posting was addressed to the forum member to whose quote I was responding to.

I understood that, Paul - I was just expanding some of my own thoughts having bounced them off yours. No offence intended.

I'm thinking other posters are like me on this one:

I never guess; I only answer if I know I'm right. All the answers I've given haven't been through "working it out", they're ones I know by heart.

There are times when actually being on holiday in an area where railways are a focus of attention that can lead you to take a far deeper interest into matters, if you have a pre-existing interest in railways, especially that of railway history. Okehampton is such a place that my wife have visited this year whilst on holiday in the West Country early this summer. This is why that I know that the station code for Okehampton is OKE and that the code for Okehampton (By bus) is XCG, as I do tend to research the area in which my wife and I do travel. There was a thread on this forum not so very long ago with the line reopening from Bere Alston to Tavistock being the subject matter. One of the aims connected to this project is also the hoped-for reinstatement of the line from Bere Alston to Okehampton.

Okehampton station has seen Devon County Council sponsor certain Sunday Rover rail services this year from St James Park in Exeter to Okehampton which ran from late May through to mid September. I think there were either four of five such services run this year. These services connected with bus services at Okehampton and also with rail services at Crediton, which is a favourite place of my wife with its very old red sandstone church in the centre of the town, but I have been made painfully aware that comments regarding churches and cathedrals or anything religious in nature are against the personal beliefs of certain forum members. That is their right to hold such views, but I also have the same right to hold my views that such places have a long historical tradition that is worthy of examination and study. This is why my wife and I have used the current Club 55 offer of ATW and First TPE to visit the minsters and cathedrals at York, Hereford and Durham in the short time that this offer has been running.

I know that most of the ones that I've got right have been by process of elimination by looking at the wall (I've got a list of all the codes that I've visited and the date first visited, but not the actual station name (to save space), but I have them in date order so, they should, in theory, be in the right order for the lines theyre on). Some of the more "exotic" ones that I've never been to, I've done by using the however many months I've gained through the time spent reading through the forums, plus some where I've looked up journeys for my friends and family.
I think this quiz is put up on the basis of trust. The OP for this quiz trusted us not to cheat with this quiz, therefore, I'm going for the assumption that no ones cheating (a bit naive of me, I know, but its better to keep this thing going)

There's no point in keeping this thread open, if everyone's just complaining, we either play the game or we don't...

So...
