I believe it has a W in it's code to distinguish it from the older Kirkby Stephen (known as Kirkby Stephen East), which closed in 1962, leaving just the present one (known as West) open. Of course, as there is just the one station left, there is no reason as to why the station code cannot be changed to KST or KSP.
