Station Cats

Are there any Railway Stations in the UK that still have a resident cat - thats if the H&S brigade will still permit it.

Don't know about today, but back in '79, we acquired our first kitten - Wandsworth - from Wandsworth Road station. Lovely little fellow, with a definite two-tone "Miaow miaow", like a VEP.

Todmorde appears to have a cat. Either that or a cat from nearby likes to sit in the ticket office.

This has brought back memories of something I was doing with my school at Waterloo one day. I don't remember exactly what, but some exercise about the station, and one of the pieces was about the station cat. This was back in the '80s.

Todmorde appears to have a cat. Either that or a cat from nearby likes to sit in the ticket office.

Perhaps it is training to be a ticket seller - another labour saving device :roll:

There is a plaque on the wall in Llandudno station ticket office commemorating the death of the station cat in April 1989.

Inverness had a famous cat called Diesel, you used to see him when he was younger jumping up and down between the track and platform at the Platform 5 & 6 buffers.

As it grew older it took up residence in the staff office on platform 6 next door to the barbers, sitting on an old multi-blue chequered Mk2 seat covered cushion.

Dingwall used to have a station dog back in the eighties, a wee black toy poodle, can't remember his/her name, i would only have been about 5 at the time, think it was the station masters dog. But I remember it wanting my sweets.

Southend Vic has Jo-Jo. A black & white moggie, who turned up a few years ago. Last year "The Powers That Be" decided she was unhygienic and she should be rehomed. After a petition from staff & passengers, she remains, mogging about quite happily. Can regularly be seen outside the BTP station, asleep in the sun. Or sitting on the bogie at the bufferstop end of the train. She always moves when the brakes are released. On cold nights, she sleeps on the photocopier in the Signing-on Point. Will try to find a pic and post it later.

Yea Romsey used to have one, although I haven't seen it in a while. It would sit on a chair opposite the ticket office and regulars would give it a pat on the way past.

Depending on what shift the particular clerk is on at Cupar a dog can be seen at the station greeting travellers

Yes, sadly met a car before he had turned 8 months.
Another favourite railway cat used to live on Barbican station. I once observed him on the bridge steps in the morning rush hour, forcing commuters to walk round him, with a spiders web between his nose and the handrail. Not for nothing was he called "Speedy".

hSE or not, they are really very clean creatures on the grand scale of things. if I ran a station there would be one!

I'm not sure how being "unhygienic" is a reason to remove a station cat. It's a station not an operating theatre.

There is a lovely black and White cat at Warwick. Not sure if it's an official station cat but can be seen on or around the station most days I am there

I remember back in the 1980s Preston station had a 3-legged cat called 'Lucky'. I thought it was pretty unlucky myself.

As for cats, I can't imagine any modern stations having one, they are a thing of the past like porters, stationmasters etc, except, of course, in very rare circumstances.

Northallerton has Brian, not the actual station cat but he does spend most of his time there!! Always up for a quick stroke
