Station Bins

At Lancaster, a Virgin run station, on Friday and on platform 3 was a bin!!! One of the clear plastic sack types and the first I've seen at Lancaster for as long as I can remember. It was a treat to drop my coffee cup into.

Before being sarcastic, did you not know that there were NO bins at Bristol Temple Meads and this has already mentioned on the thread.

Hence the "out of context", I'm sure it was just a joke on his part (and it made me smile )

If I've read that correctly, ATW have that sorted in the Cardiff area, a clear plastic cylinder that goes down to the ground but doesn't have a bottom with a clear plastic bag in it.

I don't recall any at Cardiff Central, no.

I spotted a bin at Bristol Temple Meads recently located in the Subway.

That is a recycling bin big enough only for newspapers/paper. There are no public bins at Bristol Temple Meads.

At every station in the Cardiff area and Valleys except Cardiff Central. When you are approaching on a train there which has automated announcements, passengers are requested to place any litter in the bins provided on tarins and STATIONS.

Perhaps soemone 'high up' read this thread ! Sacks have now appeared at Sheffield allowing proper disposal of litter for the first time in decades.

You mean you put the litter in the train bins, and will do so until stations have them?

I've certainly walked by a train at King's Cross and just got on to put rubbish in a bin, then hopped off again. A practice that could one day see me met by BTP and/or armed police wondering what I just planted...

If you mean you just dump the rubbish on the floor/seat, then that's rather selfish!

Some of the XC 170s don't or didn't, or at least if present I never managed to find them! I suspect it was something to do with three different interior layouts being turned into something tolerably uniform, and someone managed to leave bins off the spec for one of them.

Wigan North Western which is a Virgin Trains managed station has TWO bins, one in the waiting room on Platforms 5/6 and one in the Wigwam on Platform 4... Both were there in the Intercity days too...

On the subject of threat-assesment thingies wasn't the post box at Birmingham New Street sealed up to prevent suspect packages being deposited in it, and making the news a few months ago when they removed it and found post waiting to be picked up over a decade after it had been posted...

It's worth pointing out a couple of things regarding bins and terrorist threats. One thing is that we are facing a new kind of terrorist who does not need to run away from their device before it detonates but instead could very much BE the bomb which would render the no-bins idea pointless in that regard.

However, I should point out that the old conventional idea of using bins in such a way could be used by any other group or individual. Remember it is not just Ally-Q that could be a threat, it could be the resurgence of the IRA, any new extremest group or even just disgruntled individuals (Remember the Unabomber?).

As for me, I take my rubbish with me if I can't find a bin. Even if told to put it on the floor I wouldn't, it's just not how I was brought up

Anyway I'll leave it at that.

Temple Meads lost its bins back around '87 or '88.
Since then the only bins have been inside the catering facilities. I'm not even sure that they're there any more either.

The first time I visited Belfast I was surprised to see that Belfast Central had loads of bins. This was back in the days when Police patrols were escorted by half a dozen squaddies.

The MML spec 2 car 170/1s don't have bins in them. The other sets do (170/1 3 cars in the centre cars only).

This is because if I recall the bins were inside the seating areas of the carriage rather than in the doorways like on the other sets, and were removed at refurbishment.

Belfast is probably the last place I would expect to find a bin in the Station given its history and some of it's residents liking to play with the likes of Semtex
