Good luck to anyone after Newhaven Marine

I guess you may say I'm cheating but I am looking for station that I have called at while on a service - just for interests sake really. Would like to call at all the station in the WYPTE at some point (which means lots of Northern stoppers )

Well today, as you mentioned it, I got done:
Broadbottom, Guide Bridge, Woodley, Bredbury, Brinnington, Reddish South, Reddish North, Denton, Ryder Brow, Ashburys, Gorton, Fairfield, Hale, Altrincham, Navigation Road, Gatley, Clifton, Moorside

Hang on a minute!!hock:,you covered Denton and Reddish South in one day?,I thought we had some rules to work to here...there is one train a week going one way,so unless you are Gathurst's answer to Usain Bolt I am wondering how you managed to alight and get back on said train without leaving the station.Doubtless you will give me some mind boggling explanation so in anticipation of this,I say well done,and good show for getting Clifton too,did you walk to Moorside from there?

My rule is so long as I have taken a picture of the BR sign with the name under it, or where there isn't, take a picture of the station name above the entrance (ie: Guide Bridge) or failing that, take the platform station sign or even, at Wedgwood for example, take a picture of the timetable board which has the name at the top.

Using my push bike, I went:
Wigan Wallgate - Broadbottom (Train)
Broadbottom - Guide Bridge (Train)
Guide Bridge - Woodley (Train)
Woodley - Bredbury (Bike)
Bredbury - Brinnington (Train)
Brinnington - Reddish South - Reddish North - Denton - Ryder Brow (Bike)
Ryder Brow - Ashburys (Train)
Ashburys - Gorton (Train)
Gorton - Fairfield (Bike)
Fairfield - Hale (Train)
Hale - Altrincham - Navigation Road (bloody level crossing!!) - Gatley (Bike)
Gatley - Clifton (Train)
Clifton - Moorside (Bike) then went home.

Day 2 was more bike heavy:
Wigan Wallgate - Hazel Grove (Train)
Hazel Grove - Woodsmoor - Davenport (Bike)
Davenport - Stockport - Bramhall (Train)
Bramhall - Cheadle Hulme (Bike)
Cheadle Hulme - Irlam - Glazebrook (Train)
Galzebrook - Flixton - Chassen Rd - Urmston - Humphrey Park - Trafford Park - Salford Crscent (bike) then home.

But you have to arrive by train I take it,you ain't just cycling about taking shots are you?...mind you,if you'd covered that lot by bike in a day I'd probably more impressed!...anyway where are we planning next?,have you done the Cumbrian Coast line?.

He's gone on the wrong day to do Denton & Reddish South by train...

My rule is that I have to have stepped on the platform to count and if I've not arrived or left by train, then I must have had a reason other than station bagging to visit it. I've done Glaisdale on the C2C walk and Bridge of Orchy on the WHW and used the station seat/steps to adjust my boots and tale a breather! Went past Egton on the C2C, but didn't bag it as I had no reason to go to the station apart from bagging. Also been spotting at some stations without using the train in my youth before I started line bashing and station bagging.

Well, I still have 13 left in Greater Manchester's area to do, but I'm back to university imminently so that will put a stop to much bagging. I can foresee completing Merseyrail and Manchester's jurisdiction though before next summer.

The only stations on the Cumbrian Coast line I've ticked off are Carnforth, Silverdale, Arnside, Grange-over-Sands and Barrow. Is there a rover for that area?

There's the Cumbrian Day Ranger which covers Preston, Morecambe, Cumbrian Coast, Dumfries, Lockerbie, Skipton and all stations inside these lines. £36 adult with 1/3 off for railcard concessions.

The Cumbrian Coast Day Ranger covers all stations Barrow to Carlisle.

The Cumbria Round Robin allows Lancaster - Barrow - Carlisle - Lancaster (or vice versa).

And finally there's the Freedom of the North West rover.

Haha, most definitely agreed. I don't know how many people use the train to connect with the ferry service as opposed to people in cars but as the station is so spartan, i'd assume it's very few.

I take it by your post the trains are working that stretch again?

Quite an interesting place - nuclear power station to the left, ferries to the right. Vehicles have to go through the station concourse to get on the ferry. Most peculiar!

The 144 was actually quite busy - families with lots of luggage going to Heysham and cyclists coming back. Stopping at Morecambe so that the driver could get out and operate the points was quite interesting in this day and age. I wonder whether it will get shutdown eventually?

Not without a lot of hassle and a fight - very hard to close stations and there would probably be quite a few people protesting against any closure.

Well I count mine if I have visit the station by any means of transport but my rules are:

1. To visit a station I must be on the platform and getting there can be by car/train/walk/bus/taxi/plane/boat/UFO whatever.
If alighting by train I must wave the train off and wait for another, or can alternatively leave the station if I need to go somewhere or even take an alternative mode to another station.

2. Photos is an option but not required. I don't cheat as there is no prize at the end of the day. Plus I do get concerned if on my own taking a photo of a sign, especially at a place at night that I'd like to scratch off and never return!

3. Alighting off a train and getting on the same one is permitted only if the service changes headcode or have been on the station for a 'reasonable' amount of time (averaging half an hour or a bit more). Example, for the Former, I achieved Llandridnod Wells as a station because the tour changed headcode at the station and was a 'new' service. This counts for terminals too, like Stourbridge Town for example.
The Latter for example, Bynea was achieved on the last tour as we had a 50 minute break there, and was off the train for that time.


I have done a few trips purposely going out for stations. Once I went on a round trip down the Cotswold's on my 125 scooter scooping in all the shacks, but I don't have road transport now anyway.

Also London is fun for scooping shacks, done loads but still need more. Zone 1 is dead easy...it just gets harder until you get to the point of needing zone 6 only stations or something!

My current number is at 733 NR stations, yet to list Preserved and LU stuff yet. Plus it needs updating, scored some MML shacks, Humberside shacks and other bits and bobs recently.

If anyone count's there's manually, I found and easy way around that. The hard graft is listing all the stations into Excel that you have visited but then what I did was highlight all then sort by A-Z. Now I can find ones I have done easily as it is in A-Z order.
The number column on the left gives me a quick way to find out how many stations I have done by skipping to the end of the list and seeing what number the last station is on.
Then you can add rows to add another station in and is easy to update!
