Why not - drive to one, train to the other and bus back? Or mate drives the car between the two

After all just about every rail journey I make starts off by driving to a local station. What's the difference?

I agree.

As I said, so long as you use the railway station for its actual purpose (catch a train, change, or end a journey) then it should be counted.

Cars are not allowed if you just drive to the station, 'bag' it, and then drive off again. Otherwise, it's fine.

My post was in response to someone saying they would do Denton and Reddish South by car, which would definitely not count.

My version of 'using' a station is that I have to have got on or off a train AND left the station completely (or entered it), but also leaving a station completely and coming back to the same train during a protracted wait (either timetabled or delayed) also counts. Smallbrook Junction is exempt from this rule as it is only possible to leave here by train, so simply getting off the train and/or interchange counts as a visit. Stations like Lympstone Commando / IBM (neither of which I have visited yet, but have passed through the latter), I would count simply being on the platform as a visit due to their restrictions on entry/exit.

The vast bulk of mine were done during my Priv glory years, and had pretty much every likely one done 20 years ago, so the combination of no privs and no real opportunity to get stations griced means I only get 10-15 new ones a year ticked off these days.

Cars are not allowed if you just drive to the station, 'bag' it, and then drive off again. Otherwise, it's fine.

Does visiting the station using barge, bike or walking count? That's how I did Combe, Tackey, Heyford, Netherfield, Oulton Broad North, Northolt Park, Weymouth Quay and Folkstone Harbour.

Also disappointed that my King's Sutton, Northampton and Tenby don't count. The former was a short spotting trip in the 80s while my Dad was did some work nearby, Northampton was a 'treat' after being dragged around Christmas shopping one year and Tenby was during a 2 week family holiday. I went down there to cop the 47 that was on the saturday York train as it was a GD or similar based loco.

Actually, as I'm using my rules, they still count as I spent some time on them even if I did arrive by car, there was no 'intentional' bagging in those moves.

Not according to me, no, but then you're not me, nor am I some sort of High Priest of station gricing (even if I am a top man :)). As long as you stick to whatever rules you have set yourself, it ought to count.

I think a lot of people would argue they do not count unless a train is used.

Personally I think you should just follow your own rules and stick to them.

:D

Wow, that's some time ago. I remember the York > Tenby train in the 1980s (at the northern end of its run that is).

I think it was a family holiday in 1982. The hotel was stayed at was at the top of the hill on a road that lead to the station (Warren Street based on multimap).

Less of a rare cop for you then, but those of us who had a diet of 50s, it was a boon.

For a York-based crank, the idea of a diet of 50s being mundane (and less interesting that a GD duff) is quite literally unbelievable! We used to see them on the Donny Works test train hauling the most horrible rake of mk Is in the world to Newcastle and back. This would cause great excitement not only because an ex-works 50 was a splendid sight, but because it would mean that sometime in the next few days it would be on the 14:20 York > Plymouth relief, the traditional way of returning these beasts to the Western Region. Happy days!

They were LM interlopers that replaced the wonderful Westerns, so hence being mundane and not 'ours'. Also, reliability was suspect.

Although in the perverse world of crankery, sometimes it seems that the more unreliable and generally useless a loco or train is, the more popular it becomes!

True. Also helped that the Westerns had 2 engines so could often struggle on.

And it's presumably why no self-respecting crank liked the indecently reliable and useful class 47s.

To Toots.

I have snapped a picture (of varying quality) of these stations in the past two years (but about 70 have been since March this year):

Ainsdale, Aintree, Ansdell & Fairhaven, Appley Bridge, Ardwick, Arnside, Atherton
Bank Hall, Bare Lane, Barlaston, Barrow, Belle Vue, Bentham, Birkdale, Blackburn, Blackpool North, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool South, Blackrod, Blundellsands & Crosby, Bolton, Bootle New Strand, Bootle Oriel Road, Broad Green, Bromley Cross, Bryn, Burneside, Burscough Bridge, Burscough Junction
Carlisle, Carnforth, Cherry Tree, Chesterfield, Croston
Daisy Hill, Darwen, Deansgate, Dent, Disley
Eccleston Park
Farnworth, Freshfield, Formby
Garswood, Gathurst
Hall-i-th-wood, Hall Road, Heysham Port, Hightown, Hillside, Hindley, Horwich Parkway, Hoscar
Ince
Kendal, Kirkby, Kirkdale, Kirkham & Wesham
Lancaster, Layton, Liverpool Central, Liverpool James Street, Liverpool Lime Street, London Euston, Lytham
Manchester Airport, Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester United FC Halt, Manchester Victoria, Marple, Matlock, Matlock Bath, Meols Cop, Middlewood, Moorfields, Morecambe, Moses Gate, Moss Side
New Lane
Old Roan, Orrell, Orrell Park, Oxenholme Lake District
Parbold, Pemberton, Port Sunlight, Poulton-Le-Fylde, Prescot, Preston
Rainford, Rice Lane, Rochdale, Romiley, Rose Hill, Rufford
Salford Central, Salford Crescent, Salwick, Sandhills, Silverdale, Southport, Squires Gate, St-Annes-on-the-Sea, Staveley, Strines, Swinton
Upholland
Walkden, Walton, Waterloo, Wedgwood, Wennington, Wigan North Western, Wigan Wallgate, Windermere.

I'm aiming to tick off Walton - Ormskirk stretches as well as Fazakerly very soon. I'd also like to tick off the remainder of the GMPTE area and hopefully do the Deansgate-Lime Street and Wigan-Huyton branch too in the future.

:)

I have to say this veritable list has impressed me!,but, and there is no excuse!;)...what about Clifton,Reddish South and Denton?.You could bag at least two of these on a Friday...and either get Reddish North or Guide Bridge as well in the case of the latter two.You already have Swinton which is the nearest to Clifton....Although a quick scan of Wiki reckons the station signs have disappeared from RS and Denton,so I am happy to take you at your word when you bag 'em.
Some more good 'station bags' would br Wrexham to Bidston and the North Wales line and branches.....

Plenty 'normals' boarding and alighting when I did this.

Kids, bikes etc....didn't see anyone come out of the camp and board the train though ??

Calm down, seems to be a daily occurance ;)

Well you can't do it at the moment - the exit gate onto the footpath/cycle track is padlocked (and the gate the other side into the base is also padlocked and unmanned) until early September

Someone has actually nicked the signs from Denton? Crikey that's a bit sad, though then again I wouldn't have minded the old NNW Signs from Salford Crescent or Swinton.

As for bagging Clifton, it only has 2 trains a day. An early morning trip to Liverpool Lime Street via Wigan NW and (I think) the return in the evening. Though I'm sure they may have changed the services over the past few years I'm positive there are still only two services that stop.

Clifton isn't too far away from Swinton but be prepared for a long walk, IIRC the station is on the side of a hill so you would need to follow the main road up (and down the other side) keep following it past the school (St Marks - my old primary) then across Bolton road onto Station road and along that. I've not done the walk myself but I'd say it would take about 30-40 minutes. Just don't have your gear on show :)

Did Coombe Junction Halt this morning, did all the Devon and Cornish branch lines over a long weekend (except Okehampton), also added a few more to my list of bagged stations:

Honiton, Exmouth, Lympstone Village, Topsham, Digby & Sowton, Exeter Central, Exeter St. Davids, Crediton, Eggesford, Kings Nympton, Barnstaple, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, Torre, Torquay, Paignton, Totnes, Plymouth, Devonport, Bere Ferrers, Bere Alston, Gunnislake, Liskeard, Coombe Junction Halt, Looe, Bodmin Parkway, Par, Newquay, St. Austell, Truro, Penryn, Penmere Platform, Falmouth Docks, Redruth, Camborne, St. Ives, Carbis Bay, St. Erth and Penzance.

As said before - bagging in my terms means to either get off the train AND leave the station OR enter the station and board a train (same train as the one I just got off counts too if I completely leave the station by its exit and re-enter).

Griced Alnmouth while on the family holiday in Northumberland this week. This was the upside of a trip to Newcastle that otherwise served to double my Voyager total for the year from 2 to 4. All that careful Voyager avoidance throughout the year; curse these cheap XC only tickets!

As well as Lympstone Commando is Redcar British Steel the only other station that proclaims 'no public access' ? I think one of the Sinfin ones used to as well prior to the lines demise.

Added Malvern Link and Quainton Road to my list this week!

Do you do preserved railways as well then? I have these as a sort of sideshow, but never include them in lists of what I've done. Likewise LUL, T&WM, GMML etc. It's just BR, NIR and IE for me.

So far this year I've added Narborough, Llanelli, Trooperslane, Ribblehead, Helensburgh Central, Helensburgh Upper, Rannoch, Surbiton, Hampton Court, Wembley Central, Enfield Town, Enfield Chase, Smethwick Galton Bridge, Birmingham Snow Hill, Solihull, Warwick Parkway, Bicester North, Worcester Foregate St, Maesteg, Bridgend, Barry, Aberdare, Queens Park, Pontefract Tanshelf, Kilmarnock and Alnmouth. Definite plans for the next two weeks will see the addition of Bangor (N Wales), Luton Airport Parkway and Three Bridges :)

Quainton Road is on Network/National Rail, so I take it as being valid as a bagged station as you can get a train to a National Rail station from it on a regular dated timetable (I took the train into Aylesbury). To this end I would also include Okehampton and Sampford Courtenay and any other station that has a regular dated service from a solely Network Rail station (hence preserved railways that share a station would not count, e.g. Aviemore to Grantown).

Although I am not aiming to visit every single station my twist on this is to visit as many pubs near to stations as possible before my liver gives out.
(As it isn't totally railway related it's a list that is on a more appropriate site).
