Not true; Edinburgh to Haymarket tickets are perfectly valid on Virgin services. (I've used one thus before.)

Prestbury and Adlington (Cheshire) are both stations built by the London and North Western Railway on the Macclesfield line which are currently unstaffed and managed by Northern Rail.
