Due to naming confusion, many a tourist has found themselves at Alton looking for Alton Towers. The station eventually ended up getting a poster giving directions to Alton Towers (a mere 4 hours and 46 minutes away), going via Stoke-on-Trent before ending on the buses.
Canterbury West is approximately 1⁄2 mile to the north of Canterbury’s other station, Canterbury East. Both stations are located due west of Canterbury’s city centre; in fact, despite their names, the two stations lie on almost the same line of longitude.
From Southern's disc code system, a single disc placed on the locomotive's left-mid position (viewer's right when facing head on) indicated the train was to be routed from Southampton Central to Lymington Town
