In May 1964, Cheadle Hulme was the site of a fatal accident caused by the driver of a charter train not slowing down for a Temporary Speed Restriction. A similar fatal accident occurred to the Glasgow Sleeper at Nuneaton in June 1975.

Nuneaton station was rebuilt and enlarged for the second time in 1915, with its current buildings designed by the LNWR Architect, Reginald Wynn Owen (1876 – 1950); the most prominent feature is the clock tower. R W Owen also designed the North London Railway War Memorial, which was originally located at Broad Street station; since 2011 it has been at Hoxton station.

Ockley was one of a number of stations to have its name shortened in BR days originally being Ockley & Capel. Another such station is Snowdown which was originally Snowdown & Nonington Halt.
