Kingston derives its name from the King's Stone, the Coronation Stone now placed outside the Guildhall having been used to crown at least seven Saxon Kings (I have no idea what they did with it!). One of those kings was King Edmund, and his is one of the names inscribed aroud the base when it was moved to a location in the market place in 1850 prior to being moved to its current location in 1935.

Sat them on it, presumably. Either that, or bashed them over the head with it if they wanted to do a Charles I.

Anyway, St Margaret's - a bit of a dull connection this time

St Michaels, back in the 1950s Marks and Spencer womens clothes were branded "St Margaret" and men's clkothes "St Michael" before the whole lot later became St Michael.

Looking at some of the signalling diagrams, the lines are listed as Mains and Reliefs to the west and as Bristol lines and Castle Cary lines to the east. I haven't seen them listed as Wellington lines anywhere.

In modern terms no, the sectional appendix does show them as the Down & Up Main. I have some old five mile diagrams that show Down & Up Wellington which I imagine was used back in the day. I guess that could be a new thread former names of lines :). Slightly off subject the line between Shalford Jcn & Reigate is known as the Down & Up Redhill if you work for NWR Sussex route, & as the Down & Up Reading if you work for NWR Wessex route.

No, the signal box diagrams of the time I have seen use Mains and Reliefs. The line was four tracks.

It is only a four track section until Taunton East Jcn at approx 162m 35ch. There after it is a two track section heading in an Up Direction as far as Cogland Junction at approx 158m 50ch.The Halt that I have mentioned was 160m 25ch Information as obtained from the National Electronic Section Appendix.

No, it was four tracks from Cogload Junction to Norton Fitzwarren. The platforms for Creech were on the Relief lines.

I believe we were talking at cross purposes:) Looking at the above post it was like you were talking in the current, if you had said old signalling diagrams I would have understood!

Yes, I was referring to when the station was open though as I'd be very surprised to find it on any modern diagram.

It seems odd to still be on the 5 mile diagrams? it's just the name & mileage at the appropiate point. Probably shut many moons ago!

Northampton. On paper, boring. However, my reason runs thusly: I remember a Family Fortunes question (in the Big Money round at the end) once being "Name a town that ends in "Hampton". SOUTHampton was the first guessm and top answer, and then the second person repeated it. The buzzer went and Les Dennis asked for another. She said NORTHampton.

Blackpool South - both are near a tower (I decided against the obvious of going for Talbot Road station...)
