Electric operation at the station was inaugurated in 1978, as part of the Kings Cross Outer Suburban scheme, though the wires initially ended at Royston (Herts) until 1988.

The town of Wellington was designated as part of the new town of Telford in the 1960s. As Telford did not have its own railway station at first, Wellington station was renamed "Wellington – Telford West" to indicate that it now served the new town. After Telford Central station opened in 1986, Wellington eventually reverted to its original name, although this did not happen for a number of years.

The "Friends of Hindley Station" group was formed in 2007, with the aim of promoting the use of the station by improvements. One of these was to be influential in the creation of a direct link to Manchester Airport, which started in December 2008. This ended at the May 2018 timetable change and intending travellers now have to change at Manchester Piccadilly or Salford Crescent to reach the airport.

The Halton Curve (now formally known as the Frodsham Single Line) is a short bi-directional railway line which links the Chester to Warrington line to the Weaver Junction to Liverpool line. The route is between Frodsham Junction (north of Frodsham) and Halton Junction (south of Runcorn) and enables trains to run between the former and the latter.

Between the early 1900s and the early 1920s, William Hedge held the post of station master at both Rugby and Watford Junction. He was at Watford Junction between 1902 and 1908, and at Rugby between 1908 and 1921.
