For approximately five months in 1979, Berwick-upon-Tweed was the terminus for services from London King's Cross after the East Coast Main Line was blocked by the collapse of Penmanshiel Tunnel. Buses linked the station with Dunbar, from where a railway shuttle service continued to Edinburgh Waverley.

The only station east of Hadfield on the former Woodhead route still open is Penistone although only the platforms on the line to Huddersfield remain in use.

There are two different electrification systems at Reading. This is also the case at Ashford International.

Flat railway crossings are few and far between in Britain. Two examples can be found adjacent to Newark Northgate, and near the National Rail station at Porthmadog. (The latter example is a flat crossing between standard gauge and narrow gauge tracks)

Dumfries is home to ScotRail's southernmost train crew depot. The northernmost one is at Wick.
