From Newcastle I shall choose St Albans. Another city station with a "suffix" that no-one uses any more.

Eh? I still call it Central (in fact most people in Newcastle call it Central and not Newcastle!).

Central is not part of the official name of the station. Earlier in the thread someone tried to link to Newcastle from another station as it had "Central" in the name and that did seem to be void as Central is actually not in the name of the station.

However most people in Newcastle call it Central and often on the LDBs it is marked Newcastle Central. Only point I'm making is that Ivo claimed no-one uses the suffix anymore, which is not the case.

At least Newcastle-under-Lyme is no longer open, then things could get confusing.

Burnham: Following on from the above. The only station on the GWML between Paddington and Reading to have only one pair of platforms.

Regarding Newcastle, please remember that I don't live there, or even anywhere near it! From my experience, no-one says "Central" any more. Either way, its use is at-best limited in the "knowing" circles (i.e. here for example), which is also true of St Albans (City).

Sorry if it caused offence! ;)

Do you mean the only station on that route to have an island platform? West Ealing has only two platforms also.
