Dumfries station features in the novel The Thirty Nine Steps (1915) by John Buchan. Richard Hannay, fleeing from German secret agents, travels from London St Pancras to Galloway, changing trains at there. In the 1959 film of the book, exterior filming took place at Edinburgh Waverley station, (the now closed) Edinburgh Princes Street Station, on the Forth Bridge and on board a train hauled by an LNER A4 Pacific.

Although the ScotRail express shuttles from Glasgow Queen Street now terminate at Waverley, the original terminus of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway was at Haymarket in the West end of the city.

The original Haymarket station was opened in 1842 as the original terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. By the 1890s, Haymarket had lost some of its original appeal, and came to be often subject to criticism over a lack of maintenance and a perpetual climate of austerity. During 1894, covered platforms were added to the station by the railway engineer James Carswell who, in 1879, had become Chief Engineer to the North British Railway. In 1875, the City of Glasgow Union Railway opened their station at Springburn, including a station building designed by James Carswell.
