Electric train services were introduced at Oakleigh Park in 1976 as part of the Great Northern Inner Suburban Electrification Scheme, at which time most local trains began to run through onto the former LT Northern City line to terminate at Moorgate.

In Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations by Simon Jenkins, Glasgow Central station was one of only ten to be awarded five stars; Eggesford is one of thirty to be awarded one star.

Umberleigh station was host to a camping coach from the Southern Railway, the Southern Region and latterly by the Western Region in 1964. The last place to host Western Region camping coaches was Dawlish Warren, where they were in use until the late 1990s.

Portsmouth Harbour station was opened in 1876 as the terminus of the Portsmouth Waterside Extension to the Portsmouth Direct Line from London. The station was designed by Frederick Dale Banister MICE, who is best known for his 35 years as the Chief Engineer of the London , Brighton and South Coast Railway. One of his other projects from 1884 was to extend the LB&SCR's lines south from the joint station at Hurst Green in two directions: one to East Grinstead and later to Eridge.
