Until fairly recently, services didn't run between Whitehaven and Millom on Sundays. These days there is a limited service along the full length of the Cumbrian Coast, but Whitehaven and Millom are still stations where some services turn back.

The station is unstaffed, but like many others on this route (for example, Maryport) had a ticket vending machine installed in 2019 to allow passengers to buy tickets before boarding.

Heathrow Central is another station where the stopping services were taken over by TfL in readiness for Crossrail, but faster services continue to be operated by a different company.

Most trains to/from Inverness run as relatively long distance services to destinations within Scotland or beyond.
In weekday peak hours, Inverness has a few shorter-distance commuter-type services.
Eastwards these trains run to/from Elgin; northwards they run to/from Ardgay.

Loch Eil Outward-Bound was also built to allow people to access a specific site in the vacinity of the station - in this case, as the name suggests, the nearby activity centre.
