On 13th May 1978, the well-known railway photographer and enthusiast Bishop Eric Treacy died from a heart attack on Appleby Station whilst waiting for a railtour hauled by 92220 Evening Star. A slate plaque is displayed on the main station building to his memory, and he is buried at St Kentigern's Church, Crosthwaite, Keswick. The former LMS Black Five 45428 has been named Eric Treacy, and can be seen at Whitby station.
