From its opening, the new Gorton station was named Gorton and Openshaw, and it reverted to its original name by 1977.

It was referred to as
Openshaw in the 1964 song "Slow Train" by Flanders and Swann. Although most of the stations mentioned in the song were earmarked for closure under the Beeching Axe, a number of the stations were spared closure: Chester-le-Street, Formby, Ambergate and Arram all remain open.

During the current Northern strike action, Brigg is left completely stranded (in railway terms at least). Another station which only has a service on a Saturday, and so train-less, potentially for weeks on end during the strikes, is Reddish South.
