Manchester Piccadilly is also the main station of a Ranger/rover. (Leeds is a West Yorkshire rover and Manchester Piccadilly is the Greater Manchester ranger).

"A Crossrail branch to Kingston upon Thames via Richmond was proposed in 2003, but was dropped in 2004 due to a combination of local opposition, uncertainty over the route, cost, and insufficient return on investment."

"A more ambitious proposal named "Superlink" was proposed in 2004, at an estimated cost of £13 billion, including additional infrastructure work outside London: in addition to Crossrail's east-west tunnel, lines would connect towns including Cambridge, Ipswich, Southend, Pitsea, Guildford, Reading, Basingstoke and Northampton."

I don't think that I will stick with this method of posting via quotes, it's a bit convoluted.

When opened, Birmingham New Street had the largest arched single-span iron and glass roof in the world, being 212 feet wide (65m) and 840 feet long (256m). It held this record for 14 years until 1868, being supplanted by London St Pancras.

(The Planners of the 1960s have a lot to answer for!)
