In the 1620's, the good folks of Congleton wished to upgrade their bear-baiting by buying a more aggressive bear. But they were strapped for cash so used the money they'd been saving for a Bible. So legend gave the town the name "Beartown"

"Bare" sounds like "bear"

Convulted, even for me!! :)
