Fort Matilda is the last station before the terminus of the Gourock line, whereas Inverkip is the last station before the terminus of the Wemyss Bay line.

A camping coach was positioned at Inverkip by the Scottish region from 1959 to 1969; from 1963 it was a Pullman camping coach. A similar thing happened at Carnoustie station, which had a camping coach from 1956 to 1960; it was replaced in 1961 by a Pullman camping coach, which was joined by another Pullman in 1964 until 1967 when they were both withdrawn.

Heighington is recorded as having been the station where George Stephenson's historic locomotive 'Locomotion No. 1' was first placed on the rails of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. It is currently on display at the Locomotion Museum almost adjacent to Shildon station.

The original station building has been disused for many years; in 2016 it was reported that the franchisee, Greater Anglia, planned to demolish it and provide platform shelters in its place. It also planned to demolish the station buildings at Alresford and Kirby Cross. The buildings were subsequently offered to Tendring District Council for £1 each, should the council wish to renovate them; it's not known whether this offer was accepted, although they still seem to be in a derelict state.
