Lympstone Commando is (theoretically) closed to the public, and serves a government-owned facility; but Heathrow Terminal 5 is a private station open to the public.

Network Rail has put forward a proposal for a Western Rail Approach to Heathrow. This will be a short spur of track in tunnel which would run from a junction east of Langley to the Terminal 5 station, and would permit Great Western Main Line trains to run directly from Slough and Reading into Heathrow, without the need to change at Paddington. The proposal is currently at consultation stage and remains unconfirmed.

East of Reading, there are not many other places where green 387’s are scheduled—one other is Ealing Broadway.

Taplow was the western terminus of the original Great Western Railway line from London Paddington, which passed through Ealing Broadway on it's way there.

Taplow is right between two branches leaving the contactless zone. Likewise, two routes after Surbiton leave it: the SWML, and the New Line.

Leamington Spa is also an art-deco four platform station.

From Leamington Spa, frequent services run to Marylebone. They must pass through West Ruislip—but few stop there.

Sanquhar is another station that was closed in 1965, but subsequently reopened by British Rail more than 20 years later.

As previously noted, Sanquhar was one of number of stations on the Glasgow South Western Line closed in the 1960s but reopened in 1994. A station on the same line that remained open was at Kirkconnel.

Kirkconnel has one of the very few remaining ex-Glasgow & South Western Railway lattice post signals - albeit converted many years ago to upper quadrant operation. Other survivors, normally switched out of use, are to be found at Stranraer.
